What is a sign shop?

A Sign Shop job involves designing, producing, and installing various types of signs for businesses, events, or public spaces. Employees may work with materials like vinyl, metal, or plastic and operate printing or cutting equipment. Responsibilities can include graphic design, fabrication, painting, and customer service. Some positions require technical skills, while others focus on sales or installation.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in a sign shop?

In a Sign Shop, your daily responsibilities can include consulting with clients on their signage needs, preparing digital designs, operating printers and cutters, assembling signs using various materials, and installing signs on-site when necessary. You'll often work as part of a team, collaborating closely with designers, installers, and sometimes sales staff to ensure smooth project delivery. The job can be hands-on and may require lifting or working with power tools, so being comfortable with physical work is important. Staying organized and multitasking are key, as you may handle multiple signage projects for different clients at once.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the sign shop position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Sign Shop, you need skills in sign design, fabrication, and installation, along with familiarity with relevant materials and production processes. Proficiency with design software such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW, sign-making equipment like large-format printers and vinyl cutters, and safety certifications for handling tools and installations are often necessary. Attention to detail, strong communication, and time management skills help ensure customer satisfaction and efficient workflow. These abilities are crucial for delivering custom signage that meets client specifications, adheres to deadlines, and upholds safety standards.

Unrivaled is looking for a talented individual to add to our team at our headquarters in Ogden, Utah. We are looking for a full-time Print & Signage Production Manager to direct pre-press, wide-format print production, finishing, and installation of graphics for museums, commercial spaces, and custom environments for national and international clients.

An eye for detail, deep knowledge of print processes, and commitment to quality are a must. A qualified candidate brings technical print expertise, team leadership, and the drive to execute flawless physical installations.

What you will be doing:

  • Direct all pre-press, print production, finishing, and installation elements for physical graphic projects.
  • Manage prepress workflows, artwork proofing, file pre-flighting, and color management with internal staff, vendors, and client creative teams.
  • Operate, maintain, and oversee internal wide-format print production equipment (UV flatbeds, roll-to-roll printers, laminators, cutting tables).
  • Lead graphic installation both in-house and on-site (vinyl wall murals, acrylics, dimensional signage, custom substrates).
  • Develop internal production processes and build relationships with external vendors to hold them accountable for quality and wholesale pricing.
  • Manage project schedules, deadlines, material inventories, and job cycles from prepress to final install.
  • Support other departments through clear communication and collaboration.

What you will be bringing:

  • 3+ years of relevant wide-format print, prepress, and graphic production experience (UV flatbed, vinyl, museum graphics, environmental signage).
  • Hands-on experience with graphic finishing techniques, vinyl application, and on-site installation.
  • Hands-on experience with print/prepress workflows, RIP software, and the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop).
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to lead a crew and meet hard production deadlines.
  • Knowledge of various print substrates (acrylic, wood, vinyl, metals, foam) and structural graphic setup.

You’re a good fit if you:

  • Have a proven track record in sign shop, wide-format print, or museum exhibit production environments.
  • Possess a strong technical background in file setup, color accuracy, and material selection for physical spaces.
  • Have experience managing large-scale, multi-component signage and environmental graphic projects.
  • Are a proactive problem solver who thrives in a fast-paced custom fabrication shop.

We offer on-the-job training, growth opportunities, competitive wages, solid benefits including medical and dental, awesome projects, and a highly creative environment. Compensation DOE.
