What is sign design?

Sign design is the process of creating visual graphics and layouts for signs used in public spaces, businesses, events, and more. It involves choosing appropriate colors, fonts, materials, and images to effectively communicate messages and attract attention. Sign designers consider factors such as visibility, readability, branding, and compliance with regulations. Their work ranges from designing storefront signage to wayfinding systems in large complexes. Good sign design helps ensure that information is conveyed clearly and professionally.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in sign design, and how can applicants prepare for them?

Sign design professionals often encounter challenges such as balancing creative vision with strict regulatory requirements, meeting tight deadlines, and collaborating closely with clients, fabricators, and local authorities. To prepare for these challenges, applicants should familiarize themselves with zoning and signage regulations, develop strong communication skills, and build proficiency in design software like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW. Being adaptable and detail-oriented is key, as projects frequently require revisions and coordination among multiple stakeholders to ensure the final product meets both functional and aesthetic standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sign Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sign Designer, you need strong graphic design skills, proficiency in typography and color theory, and usually a degree or certification in graphic design or a related field. Expertise in design software like Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, and familiarity with large-format printing and sign fabrication processes are essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective client communication are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure that signage is visually appealing, functional, and meets both client and regulatory requirements.

Job description

Join the 2025 AIA Firm Award Winner shaping a more sustainable future.
LPA is a collective of designers, engineers, and researchers committed to tackling the biggest issues of our time. Our "No Excuses" integrated design approach was recognized by the AIA as "a trailblazer in sustainable, high-performance architecture". At LPA you'll be part of the team that is changing the way the industry thinks about design and carbon emissions, built around the belief that we only achieve our goals when everybody has a seat at the table and all input is valued.
We're currently seeking an Interior Design Coordinator to join our dynamic Workplace team. You'll be part of a culture that values deep collaboration, technical excellence, and continual growth. Our Workplace studio is committed to creating engaging environments that foster communication and collaboration. We have completed projects such as Edwards Lifescience Campus Expansion, Southland Industries and Technology Company HQ Wellness Center.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across our studios-and help bring high-performance, community-first design to life.
What You'll Do:
  • Collaborate closely with architects, engineers, and designers as part of LPA's integrated, multidisciplinary design process.
  • Take ownership of projects from concept through completion, contributing across all phases of design and delivery.
  • Partner with Project Managers and Project Designers to execute project tasks, including coordinating and overseeing interior documentation.
  • Prepare and manage design development and construction documentation to ensure quality, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Lead and oversee the production work of junior designers, providing guidance and quality control.
  • Review, coordinate, and process construction administration documents throughout the construction phase.
  • Conduct and organize research on materials, products, and construction methods to support design solutions.
  • Receive mentorship from project leaders and managing directors while actively mentoring and supporting the professional growth of junior designers.

What We Offer:
At LPA, your growth and contributions matter. We foster a collaborative culture where creative ideas are valued, and voices are heard.
  • Mentorship from Managing Directors, Design Directors, and senior team members across disciplines.
  • Career development support, including licensure incentives, professional development grants, and in-house training.
  • Ongoing education through LPA+U courses and Tech Talks focused on innovative, sustainable practices.
  • 8 paid hours of volunteer time each year.
  • Opportunities to propose and lead projects that impact your local community, including more than $1 million since 2015 in Habitat for Humanity builds, scholarships, and other pro bono community projects.
  • Access to our Professional Development Grants program, created to encourage professional development and further LPA's collective knowledge as a firm. Over the life of the grant program, we have invested $1,196,890 and impacted 848 LPA employees.

What We're Looking For:
Required:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or Interior Architecture.
  • 5+ years of professional experience across all phases of interior architecture projects.
  • Actively pursuing CID certification (or currently certified) and LEED accreditation.
  • Proficiency in Revit; working knowledge of Rhino and Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • Strong understanding of building codes, applicable regulations, construction materials, and specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with creativity, innovation, and design vision throughout programming, design, and project execution.
  • Commitment to producing high-quality, well-coordinated construction documentation.

LPA is an integrated design firm with offices in California and Texas. We specialize in creating innovative, sustainable environments that work better, do more with less and improve people's lives. We provide a vibrant and rewarding work environment-one that values and fosters creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, community engagement and ongoing career development and growth. LPA is also committed to diversity, wellness and work-life balance. LPA offers competitive salaries and generous benefits, including health and dental insurance, retirement and financial, wellness and other work/life plans.
If you are hired at LPA, your base salary is based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, experience and/or project complexity. We believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as part of any final offer.
