Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Van Shuttle Driver at Huston-Tillotson University is responsible for providing safe and efficient transportation services for students, faculty, and staff across the university campus and to designated off-campus locations. This role involves operating university-owned vans or shuttle buses, adhering to scheduled routes, and ensuring a high level of customer service. The Van Shuttle Driver plays a crucial role in supporting the university’s transportation needs, contributing to a positive campus experience.
 

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under general supervision, operates university vehicles to shuttle students between Huston-Tillotson’s (HT’s) campus and designated off-campus housing.
  • Operates shuttle in a safe, courteous, and efficient manner, adhering to scheduled routes and traffic regulations.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to passengers, assisting with on and offboarding if needed, and addressing any questions or concerns.
  • Maintain accurate records of daily trips, including mileage, fuel consumption, and any incidents or maintenance issues.
  • Conduct general inspections of the vehicle to ensure it is in good working condition, reporting any mechanical problems or safety concerns to the Director of Campus Safety.
  • May be called upon to assist with coordination of shuttle services, including special events or changes in route.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures, as well as local, state, and federal transportation regulations.
  • Foster a positive and professional image of the university through courteous and respectful interactions with all passengers and colleagues.
  • Requires flexibility in work hours, including potential evenings or weekends depending on scheduling needs.
  • Completes annual training administered by the university on Defensive Driving, Van Safety, and other trainings as assigned. 
  • Other duties as assigned to support the mission and vision of the university.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or training in transportation or customer service is a plus.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license with a clean driving record and the ability to obtain any required certifications or endorsements.
  • Required to submit to a pre-employment drug screening and background check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Familiarity with and adherence to all traffic laws and safety regulations
  • Ability to estimate driving time and fuel efficiency
  • Proven experience in a driving or transportation role preferred, with a strong focus on safety and customer service.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse population.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage time effectively and adhere to schedules.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and professionally.
  • Ability to lift and assist passengers with luggage or mobility aids if necessary.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle.

SUPERVISION

  • This position reports to the Student Affairs Office Manager.

SALARY RANGE

  • $19 hourly

Founded in 1875, Huston-Tillotson University is Austin's first institution of higher education. The University is an independent, liberal arts, church-related, historically black institution located on a 23-acre tree-lined campus near downtown Austin, Texas. The University is affiliated with United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ, and the United Negro College Fund. Undergraduate, four-year degrees in business, education, the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences are awarded. All faculty are engaged in a range of activities, their primary focus is teaching. The student-teacher ratio is 15 to one, which allows an environment of personalized attention to students.
