Job description

                    Colonial Cartage Driver Job Description
Class A truck driver will be responsible for transporting cargo from our warehouse to various customers in a safe and timely manner. The position requires the candidate to safely operate a 75-foot commercial vehicle to deliver products to our customers’ customers within Georgia. The driver needs to be physically fit to make deliveries in any challenging location. The driver needs to work closely with multiple levels of the supply chain. They will be responsible for safe delivery and pick up of product including overnight travel.
Driver duties and responsibilities
  • Transport cargo by means of long-distance driving up to 11 hours within a 24-hour period.
  • May sit for long periods of time up to 14 hours per day
  • Arrive at destinations at scheduled times
  • Load and unload freight and record cargo delivery discrepancies if any
  • Research and plan for traffic, construction and weather delays
  • Follow all local, state and federal traffic laws, rules and accident procedures
  • Use navigation applications to determine the best route for each destination
  • Interact with co-workers, customers, vendors and the general public professionally at all times
  • Ensure the vehicles are fueled, cleaned and ready for use
  • Inspect vehicles and arrange for vehicle repairs as needed
  • Keep activity log, log hours, mileage records and repair records up-to-date
Driver skills and qualifications
A successful driver candidate needs the following skills and qualifications:
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license
  • Minimum two years of Class A driving experience to perform the job safely
  • Excellent navigation, time management, organizational, written and mathematical skills
  • Able to be away from home for extended periods, available for around the clock trips and remain alert
  • Able to work and drive for extended period of time up to 70 hours per week (14 hours within a 24-hour period)
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to interact with customers
  • Ability to pass drug screens, background checks and a FMCSA physical examination,
  • Physical stamina and good upper body strength to lift up to 75lbs, able to load and unload freight by pushing/pulling pallet-jack with up to 500lbs cargo. Able to climb in & out of commercial vehicles
