What is a Shutdown Pay Per Diem?

A Shutdown Pay Per Diem job is a temporary position in industries like construction, oil and gas, or manufacturing, where workers perform maintenance, repairs, or upgrades during a plant or facility shutdown. These jobs often offer a daily per diem allowance to cover lodging, meals, and other expenses for workers traveling from outside the area. Shutdowns can last from a few days to several weeks, depending on the project. Workers are typically hired on a contract basis and may move from one shutdown project to another.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a Shutdown Pay Per Diem?

To thrive as a Shutdown Pay Per Diem worker, you need experience in industrial shutdowns and turnarounds, familiarity with safety protocols, and relevant trade certifications such as OSHA or TWIC. Comfort with scheduling systems, time-keeping apps, and job-specific tools like scaffolding, welding, or machinery operation is essential. Reliability, adaptability, and strong communication skills help workers excel in fast-paced and changing environments. These competencies are crucial for meeting tight deadlines, maintaining safety, and ensuring smooth project execution during critical shutdown periods.

What should I expect in terms of work schedule and environment as a Shutdown Pay Per Diem?

In a Shutdown Pay Per Diem role, you can expect to work long hours, often on a compressed schedule that may include nights, weekends, and overtime, depending on the project needs. The work environment is typically industrial, such as refineries, plants, or large construction sites, where safety compliance and teamwork are critical. Per diem positions generally provide daily allowances for meals and lodging, especially if you're required to travel away from home. This work is generally project-based, meaning employment can be intense during shutdowns but may pause in between projects, offering flexibility and variety if you enjoy dynamic, hands-on work.
