What does a show producer do?

A Show Producer is responsible for overseeing the planning, coordination, and execution of a live or recorded show, such as television programs, theater productions, or live events. They manage the creative vision, supervise production staff, handle budgeting, and ensure the show runs smoothly from concept to final presentation. Show Producers also coordinate with directors, writers, performers, and technical teams to bring the production to life and meet deadlines. Their role is essential in delivering a high-quality show that meets both creative and logistical goals.

How does a show producer typically collaborate with technical teams and creative staff during a production?

A Show Producer regularly works closely with both technical teams (such as lighting, sound, and stage management) and creative staff (including writers, directors, and performers) to ensure the production runs smoothly. This role requires effective communication and coordination to align creative vision with technical feasibility, often mediating between departments to resolve any logistical or artistic challenges. Producers are usually present at rehearsals and technical run-throughs, providing feedback and adjustments as needed. This collaborative environment fosters problem-solving and innovation, making adaptability and teamwork essential qualities for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a show producer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Show Producer, you need strong project management, creative vision, budgeting skills, and experience in media production, often backed by a degree in communications, film, or a related field. Familiarity with production software (such as Adobe Creative Suite), scheduling tools, and industry-standard equipment is typically required. Excellent leadership, adaptability, and communication skills help a producer manage diverse teams and solve problems on the fly. These abilities are essential to ensure shows are executed smoothly, on budget, and meet creative and client expectations.

What is the difference between Show Producer vs Show Director?

AspectShow ProducerShow Director
Primary RoleOversees overall production, manages budgets, coordinates teams, and ensures project completionFocuses on the creative vision, directs performers and technical staff during performances or recordings
CredentialsExperience in production management, often with event or media production backgroundBackground in directing, theater, or media arts, often with creative or artistic credentials
Work EnvironmentOffice-based, on-site at venues, or in production officesOn set, stage, or studio during rehearsals and live shows

While both roles are essential in show production, the show producer manages the overall logistics and coordination, ensuring the project stays on track financially and schedule-wise. The show director, on the other hand, focuses on the creative execution, guiding performers and technical teams to realize the artistic vision. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in the entertainment and event industries.

How do you become a show producer?

To become a show producer, individuals typically need experience in media production, strong organizational and communication skills, and knowledge of the industry. Many producers start in entry-level roles such as production assistants or coordinators and gain experience through internships or related positions, often developing skills in project management, budgeting, and team leadership.

Job description

Who We Are
Hammer Media is the digital media company behind Caleb Hammer and his YouTube channels, including the hit show Financial Audit.
In just three years, we've grown to 3.5+ million subscribers and over 4 billion views, making Financial Audit one of the fastest-growing personal finance shows on the internet. Our content breaks down real financial situations, helping millions of people better understand their money and make smarter financial decisions. We've built an entire ecosystem around financial literacy-combining engaging media, real financial stories, and practical tools that help people create lasting change in their financial lives.
As we continue to grow, Hammer Media is expanding into new shows and formats, reaching wider audiences and creating more ways to educate.
About the Role
Our membership platform serves tens of thousands of paying members across multiple tiers and runs a daily content engine of exclusive shows, bonus content, and community programming.
We're looking for a Show Producer to own the full creative and operational lifecycle of our membership content. This person sets the editorial vision, drives the production schedule, and makes sure every piece of content that hits our members is intentional, high-quality, and on time.
What You'll Do:
  • Oversee end-to-end production of all membership-exclusive content - from concept to publish
  • Own pre-production planning by preparing production documents, show outlines, research, and shoot logistics
  • Produce on the studio floor during filming, keeping productions on schedule, coordinating talent and crew, and ensuring a seamless shoot from setup through wrap
  • QA every deliverable before it reaches members
  • Track member engagement data and use it to inform editorial decisions
  • Build and maintain production SOPs, runsheets, and team workflows
  • Review rough cuts and final edits to ensure each episode meets our editorial standards for quality, pacing, storytelling, and accuracy
  • Partner cross-functionally and coordinate with the broader Caleb Hammer Media team on integrations, promotions, and campaign timing

Requirements
  • 2+ years of experience running production on a YouTube channel, podcast network, membership platform, or similar digital content operation
  • Proven track record managing a multi-show or multi-format slate - not just a single series
  • Strong editorial instincts: you know what hooks, what holds, and what bores
  • Highly organized with real project management experience - ClickUp, Asana, or equivalent
  • Comfortable owning a tight publishing schedule and keeping a team accountable to it
  • Clear communicator who can give direct, constructive feedback to talent and crew
  • Self-directed and high-output - this is not a role with a lot of hand-holding

Benefits
We are an in-office team in East Austin because we believe the best ideas happen when we're in the same room. Our culture is high-energy, collaborative, and focused on radical accountability.
  • Relocation Assistance: Not in Austin? No problem. We provide a relocation package to help the right candidate join us here
  • Awesome Office & Team: Work from our East Austin office with a stocked snack bar, catered lunches, and a team that actually likes spending time together
  • Unlimited PTO: We trust you to manage your time and your results
  • Health & Wealth: 100% coverage for employee health, dental, and vision, plus a 401(k) with a company match
  • Lunch & Events: Lunch stipend and quarterly team-building activities (we go big on our events)
  • Pet-friendly: There's a good chance you'll be greeted by a few wagging tails when you walk through the door
