What is a short term temporary job?

Short term temporary jobs are positions that are designed to last for a limited period, typically ranging from a few days to a few months. These roles are often used by employers to fill gaps due to employee absences, seasonal workload increases, or special projects. Temporary workers are usually hired through staffing agencies or directly by companies, and they may not receive the same benefits as permanent employees. These jobs can be a good way to gain experience, earn income quickly, or transition between longer-term positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a short term temporary employee?

To thrive as a Short Term Temporary employee, you generally need adaptability, reliability, and the ability to quickly learn new tasks, with educational or experience requirements varying by assignment. Familiarity with common office software, time-tracking systems, or industry-specific tools may be required depending on the position. Strong communication, a positive attitude, and the ability to work independently help distinguish top performers in temporary roles. These skills ensure you can quickly integrate into different teams, complete tasks efficiently, and provide value in fast-changing work environments.

What are some common challenges faced by individuals in short term temporary positions?

Short term temporary roles often require quick adaptation to new environments, as assignments may vary by company, team, or industry. One of the main challenges is getting up to speed with company processes and expectations in a limited timeframe. Additionally, temporary employees may experience uncertainty regarding job continuity and may need to proactively seek feedback to ensure their contributions are aligned with team goals. Building strong relationships quickly and demonstrating reliability are key to making the most of these assignments.

Join our store teams this Autumn/Winter and help us deliver an incredible experience for our customers. Contracts range from a few days to several months, depending on store needs, making this an ideal opportunity if you're looking for flexible seasonal work.
Life at NEXT is full of energy, with a strong sense of teamwork and plenty of opportunities to learn, grow, and develop new skills.

Contract details: It is anticipated the fixed term contracts will range from 1 or 2 days up to 24 weeks in duration. The individual store will confirm the exact duration available during the application process.
Please note: Availability for our Autumn Sale weekend (Friday 18th September and Saturday 19th September) and our Winter Sale (Thursday 24th December, Sunday 27th December and Monday 28th December) may be required, depending on your start date, contract duration and store needs.
What You'll Do
As part of our in-store team, you'll work on the sales floor, in the stockroom, or across both areas, playing an important role in keeping the store running smoothly during our busy Autumn/Winter season. Every shift makes a difference in this high-energy retail environment, helping us deliver an exceptional experience for our customers.
On the sales floor, you'll:

  • Deliver fast, friendly service and help customers find what they need
  • Keep the sales floor well stocked, organised, and easy to shop
  • Ensure the shop floor is clean, tidy, and visually appealing

In the stockroom, you'll:

  • Efficiently process deliveries and replenish the sales floor to ensure it remains fully stocked and presentable
  • Pick, pack, and transfer stock to meet customer timescales and ensure accurate parcel processing
  • Keep the back of house clean, safe and organised

Where needed, you may support both areas.

What You'll Bring

To succeed in this role, you will be:

  • Friendly and approachable, always happy to help
  • A team player who stays calm in busy moments
  • Reliable, organised, and ready to get involved
  • Keen to learn and take pride in doing a great job
  • Respectful, committed and eager to play your part

If you're looking for an engaging, hands-on role this season, we'd love to hear from you.

Why join us?
