What is a short range mine planner?

Short Range Mine Planners are professionals responsible for developing and implementing detailed mining plans that cover the near-term future, typically from daily up to several months ahead. They ensure that mining operations are carried out efficiently and safely, aligning daily activities with the longer-term strategic mine plan. Their work includes scheduling equipment, coordinating with other departments, and adjusting plans in response to operational changes or unexpected challenges. By providing accurate short-term plans, they help optimize production and resource use while maintaining compliance with safety and environmental standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a short range mine planner?

A Short Range Mine Planner should have a strong background in mining engineering or geology, with proficiency in mine planning principles and relevant academic qualifications such as a bachelor's degree in mining or a related field. Expertise in technical tools like mine planning software (e.g., Surpac, Vulcan, or Deswik), GIS systems, and familiarity with safety regulations and reporting standards is typically required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with operational teams and adapting to dynamic mining environments. These capabilities ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective mine operations by producing actionable short-term plans aligned with production goals.

What are the typical challenges a short range mine planner faces when balancing production targets with safety and environmental regulations?
