What is a short form content creator?

A short form content creator is someone who specializes in producing brief, engaging pieces of digital content, typically ranging from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. This content is designed for platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and similar social media channels. The goal is to quickly capture the audience's attention and encourage interaction, often using trends, humor, or visually appealing elements. Short form content creators need to be creative, adaptable, and up-to-date with platform algorithms and audience preferences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a short form content creator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Short Form Content Creator, you need strong skills in video editing, content ideation, and a keen understanding of social media trends, usually supported by experience with digital platforms. Proficiency with editing tools like Adobe Premiere Pro, CapCut, or mobile apps, and familiarity with analytics systems is typically required. Creativity, adaptability, and the ability to engage audiences quickly are vital soft skills in this role. These abilities help ensure content is both high-quality and optimized for rapid consumption, driving views, shares, and audience growth in a competitive digital landscape.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals creating short form content, and how can they be addressed?

One of the main challenges in short form content creation is capturing the audience's attention quickly and effectively within a limited time frame. Creators must balance creativity with brevity, ensuring messages are clear and engaging. Additionally, staying updated on rapidly changing trends and platform algorithms can be demanding. Collaborating closely with marketing teams, analyzing performance metrics, and continuously experimenting with new formats can help overcome these challenges and improve content impact.

Sr. Video Editor (short-form)

Databricks

San Francisco, CA

Full-time

Posted 23 days ago

Job description

MKTQ227R42

Location: San Francisco Bay Area

Databricks is looking for a Short-Form Video Editor to join our in-house brand team. In this role, you'll own the full lifecycle of short-form video for our brand channels - from topic planning and storyboarding through editing, motion graphics, and publishing. You'll take raw footage shot by our subject matter experts (engineers, researchers, product leaders) and shape it into scroll-stopping, on-brand video that makes complex data and AI topics feel relevant, human, and shareable. We need someone who can operate editing software fluently, but who also has the creative judgment to know what makes a video work - the hook, the pacing, the caption strategy, the platform-native feel - and who understands how AI is changing both video production and content discovery.

The impact you will have:

  • You've built a repeatable short-form content engine for Databricks' brand channels. You've established a topic pipeline and storyboarding process - pulling from blogs, launches, webinars, and exec talks - so video output is planned and proactive rather than reactive, requiring strong content marketing instincts and the ability to work independently from a brief.
  • You've turned raw SME footage into a recognizable, high-performing video style. Unscripted or lightly-scripted footage from engineers and executives is consistently shaped into tight, retention-optimized cuts that feel native to each platform, requiring sharp post-production editing skills and a strong eye for pacing and story.
  • You've made AI tools a core part of the production workflow, not a bolt-on. Turnaround time on video production has meaningfully decreased because you've integrated AI-assisted editing, transcription, captioning, and repurposing tools into daily work, while keeping a human hand on creative quality - requiring genuine fluency with modern AI video tools and the judgment to know when not to rely on them.
  • Databricks' short-form content is measurably easier to find and surface, including by AI answer engines. Video (and its supporting metadata, captions, and repurposed text) is produced with AIO/GEO best practices in mind, requiring a working understanding of how AI-driven discovery and recommendation systems evaluate content.
  • Motion graphics have elevated the brand's video content beyond straight cuts. Animated explainers, kinetic text, and simple data visualizations are a regular part of the content mix, requiring hands-on motion graphics and animation skills (e.g., After Effects).
  • Cross-functional partners trust you to run with a brief. Content marketing, product marketing, and executive comms treat you as an owner of the video format, not just an execution resource - requiring strong collaboration skills and consistent, on-brand judgment across a high volume of content.
  • Video performance data actively shapes what gets made next. You track engagement and retention metrics across channels and use them to adjust format, pacing, and topic selection over time, requiring a data-informed approach to creative decisions.

What we look for:

  • 5+ years of professional video editing experience, ideally with in-house or agency experience producing short-form social content for a brand.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating short-form editing (15-90 second formats): hook design, pacing, storytelling in compressed formats, and platform-native style.
  • Proficiency in professional editing software (Adobe Premiere Pro and/or DaVinci Resolve; After Effects for motion graphics).
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted video editing and production tools, and interest in keeping pace with how AI is changing the editing workflow.
  • Working knowledge of AIO/GEO principles and how they intersect with social content strategy - or strong aptitude and interest in developing this.
  • Motion graphics and animation skills: lower thirds, kinetic typography, simple data visualizations, branded templates.
  • Content marketing sensibility: comfortable turning a brief or a long-form asset into a short-form video concept and shot list without heavy hand-holding.
  • Understanding of audio editing/sound design and caption/text-overlay design for sound-off viewing.
  • Ability to manage multiple videos in production simultaneously and hit fast turnaround deadlines in a high-volume content environment.
  • Experience translating technical or B2B subject matter into accessible, engaging content is a strong plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in film, media, design, or related field - or equivalent experience.
