What is a Shopify consultant?

A Shopify Consultant is a professional who specializes in helping businesses set up, optimize, and manage their online stores using the Shopify platform. They offer expert advice on store design, functionality, app integrations, digital marketing, and e-commerce strategies to maximize sales and improve user experience. Shopify Consultants can assist with everything from initial store setup and customization to ongoing support and troubleshooting. Their goal is to ensure that clients get the most out of their Shopify stores and achieve their business objectives.

What are some common challenges Shopify consultants face when customizing client stores, and how can they be addressed?

Shopify Consultants often encounter challenges such as integrating third-party apps, ensuring theme compatibility, and customizing functionalities to fit unique client needs. These tasks require a strong understanding of Shopify's Liquid templating language, as well as staying updated on platform updates and best practices. To address these challenges, consultants typically collaborate closely with developers, designers, and the client's team, utilize Shopify's extensive documentation, and test changes in staging environments before deploying them live. Effective communication with clients is also key to managing expectations and ensuring successful outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Shopify consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shopify Consultant, you need expertise in e-commerce strategy, web development, and a deep understanding of the Shopify platform, usually backed by experience or relevant certifications. Familiarity with tools like Shopify Admin, Liquid templating, analytics platforms, and third-party app integrations is essential. Strong communication, problem-solving, and client management skills set top consultants apart in delivering tailored solutions. These skills and qualities ensure efficient store setup, optimization, and ongoing growth for clients in the competitive e-commerce landscape.

Job description

PagerDuty (NYSE:PD) is a leader in Digital Operations Management. In an always-on world, organizations of all sizes trust PagerDuty to help them deliver a perfect digital experience to their customers, every time. Teams use PagerDuty to identify issues and opportunities in real time and bring together the right people to fix problems faster and prevent them in the future. Over 13,000 organizations (including 60 of Fortune 100) rely on PagerDuty to succeed with Digital Transformation, Cloud Migration, and DevOps Modernization. Notable customers include GE, Cisco, Genentech, Electronic Arts, Cox Automotive, Netflix, Shopify, Zoom, DoorDash, Lululemon and more. We are expanding rapidly as a platform for Digital Operations Management using AI/ML and Automation and growing our adoption by Development, IT, Customer Service, Security, and other teams across the organization.

We are seeking a technical and customer-focused Solutions Consultant II to join our team. The Solutions Consultant II will partner with sales, product, and customer teams to build trusted relationships and help customers realize the value of PagerDuty's Operations Cloud, acting as a consultant, technical salesperson, and product specialist throughout the sales cycle.

Day to day, you'll independently own the Proof of Value process — from initial discovery through final presentation — and run workshop-style technical discovery sessions that translate customer needs into a clear path forward. You'll deliver custom demos that tie technical solutions to business value while building relationships with technical champions inside each account. Across every interaction, you'll translate complex concepts for audiences ranging from SREs and developers to business stakeholders, confidently navigating functional and competitive objections along the way.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build technical champions at customer accounts through standalone meetings and conversations, working closely with AEs to identify and grow them.
  • Own the Proof of Value (POV) process end-to-end: identify the business case with the AE, scope use cases and success criteria, document deliverables and timelines, and deliver both technical and final POV presentations.
  • Conduct workshop meetings that include deep-dive technical discovery, tying the technical solution to business value, visualizing current and future states, and delivering recommendations.
  • Prepare and deliver custom demos tailored to unique customer pain points, partnering with automation engineers on complex scenarios.
  • Conduct lightweight Operations Cloud Lifecycle Assessments (OCLA) with customers.
  • Effectively converse and persuade at a technical level with practitioners (SREs, developers, MIMs), and handle functional and competitive objections.
  • Articulate PagerDuty's differentiators relative to a customer's current and future state, incorporating them into POVs and custom demonstrations.
  • Break down complex technical concepts and explain them clearly to audiences ranging from DevOps engineers to business stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate notes and feedback in the CRM regarding customer input, both wins and losses.
  • Share best practices and reusable assets with other Solutions Consultants to improve the efficiency of the team.
  • This Role Requires
Requirements
  • 4–7 years of pre-sales (or post-sales technical) experience
  • Basic skills in a scripting/coding language (Bash, Python, or PowerShell)
  • Intermediate-level Linux/Windows working experience
  • Beginner-level experience working with cloud service infrastructure components (VMs, load balancers, security settings, identity management)
  • Strong communication skills to build and manage relationships with new and existing clients
  • Project management skills and the ability to come up to speed quickly on new products and processes
  • Experience selling SaaS solutions
  • Ability to travel to customer sites as necessary
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in a technical field
  • Experience with Observability, AIOPs, Automation, or IT Service Management tools
  • Experience in enterprise sales environments
  • A track record of staying current on SC processes to help drive team efficiency and productivity
