Shop Manager

As a shop manager with SCAD Atlanta's physical resources team, you'll work to ensure that our innovative students have safe and reliable access to the extensive collection of tools and equipment they need to complete class projects and further their education. Spaces for which you will be responsible include the wood and metal shops, foundry, plastic lab, and paint rooms at SCAD Studio and other spaces at FORTY FIVE, as needed.

In support of the shops, you will:
Coordinate shop hours and staff schedules with the academic calendar; work directly with your supervisor to conduct interviews, hire, and train staff on customer service, WebCheckout, and equipment care and use; review shop statistics to ensure efficient usage
Organize and assign daily work tasks to staff; implement shop policies and procedures; guide students and faculty on challenging projects; speak at all student meetings and introductory shop classes
Communicate procedure changes with faculty, staff, and students; conduct multiple staff meetings per quarter to review policies and identify areas of concern; consult with your supervisor on all special projects and external requests
Develop shop policies and procedures; evaluate space usage and make revisions for incoming equipment, processes, and student requirements; schedule and manage tours for faculty, staff, VIPs, and students

As a manager, you will:
Maintain, repair, and operate shop equipment; report needed equipment repairs and perform preventive maintenance; ensure a clean and functional shop environment
Work with your supervisor on shop operations and communicate areas of concern; use the work order software to submit and coordinate repairs and maintenance requests; assist your supervisor with shop operation and capital budgets
Research materials, supplies, and vendors to ensure quality, price, and availability; foster relationships with vendors to acquire all materials/parts, tools, and consumables; coordinate deliveries and facilitate the unloading and processing of materials
Work with faculty to prepare quarterly inventory and resources; ensure the sales terminal is up to date and accurate; maintain sufficient inventories to meet academic demands

Additionally, as a shop manager, you will:
Demonstrate the safe operation of shop equipment and related procedures; implement and comply with all safety policies and procedures; coordinate with an environmental health and safety (EHS) officer to implement OSHA standards
Coordinate with EHS to train staff on first aid and emergency protocols; ensure first aid stations are stocked; administer basic first aid as needed
Work directly with students and faculty to ensure support and quality of output; advise students on basic fabrication issues; correct file setup and complete projects
Proactively process jobs to identify and provide solutions to issues; provide backup operations support during times of high demand; participate in university-wide special projects and events as requested

Minimum qualifications:
At least three years of experience in a related discipline
Prior experience in a woodshop or fabrication environment and managing multiple shifts
Advanced knowledge and experience in the safe and efficient operation, repair, and maintenance of shop equipment and hand tools
Knowledge of OSHA safety protocols
Familiarity with wood, metal, foundry, and plastic shop tools, techniques, and equipment

Preferred qualifications:
Bachelor's degree
Experience in an academic environment
Proficient computer skills, including Adobe and Microsoft software and 3D-modeling programs
Knowledge of furniture, mold, and model-making techniques, casting, and equipment safety protocols

Work hours:The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
