Shop Technician II
Join IAS as a Shop Technician II and help build custom systems that solve complex, real-world challenges.
In this hands-on production role, you'll independently fabricate, assemble, plumb, mount, and test equipment using released drawings, bills of material, specifications, and work instructions. You'll work on multi-component systems that may include pumps, valves, instruments, controls, panels, piping, tanks, skids, and structural supports.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced technician who takes pride in craftsmanship, solves problems thoughtfully, and enjoys helping others improve. Although this is not a people-management position, you'll have meaningful technical ownership and serve as a trusted resource for less-experienced technicians.
What You'll Do
  • Independently plan and complete assigned fabrication, mechanical mounting, plumbing, assembly, testing, packaging, receiving, and shipping work.
  • Interpret mechanical and assembly drawings, bills of material, cut lists, dimensions, specifications, and work instructions.
  • Fabricate PVC piping and plastic components through accurate layout, measurement, cutting, preparation, joining, routing, drilling, and finishing.
  • Mount pumps, valves, instruments, controls, supports, panels, piping, and related equipment securely on skids, frames, tanks, and assemblies.
  • Complete multi-step system builds and support functional, leak, pressure, flow, and other defined testing.
  • Diagnose common fit, plumbing, assembly, and workmanship problems.
  • Perform authorized basic electrical tasks, including wire preparation, routing, labeling, terminations, continuity checks, component mounting, and panel or control-system assembly support.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, shop equipment, solvents, and production materials safely and correctly.
  • Inspect work throughout the production process and verify first-piece, critical, and completed work.
  • Identify drawing, bill-of-material, material, fit, access, sequencing, tooling, and manufacturability issues before they affect quality or schedule.
  • Recommend practical solutions while respecting revision control and avoiding unauthorized design changes.
  • Complete work-order, labor-time, material-use, completion, scrap, and status records accurately and on time.
  • Take ownership of defects, rework, cleanup, and complete production documentation.
  • Maintain organized tools, materials, work-in-process, and work areas according to IAS safety, housekeeping, and 5S standards.
  • Support material staging, receiving, inventory counts, crating, loading, facility upkeep, schedule recovery, and other production needs.
  • Keep the Production Manager informed of progress, constraints, risks, mistakes, and decisions needed.
  • Help onboard and coach Shop Technician I employees by demonstrating safe methods, explaining quality standards, checking understanding, and offering constructive feedback.

What You'll Bring
  • At least two years of relevant experience in manufacturing, fabrication, mechanical assembly, plumbing, construction, installation, maintenance, or field service-or an equivalent combination of technical education and demonstrated hands-on ability.
  • Developed skill working with PVC piping and plastic materials.
  • Experience mounting mechanical equipment and completing multi-component assemblies.
  • Working knowledge of basic electrical principles, wiring practices, component identification, control-system hardware, and safe work boundaries.
  • Ability to work from mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, bills of material, dimensions, specifications, and work instructions with limited assistance.
  • Proficiency with common hand, power, measuring, cutting, drilling, and fabrication tools.
  • A demonstrated commitment to safe work, dependable quality, productivity, problem-solving, documentation, teamwork, and accountability.
  • The judgment to recognize when information is missing or a condition is unsafe-and the confidence to stop and ask before proceeding.
  • Clear, direct, and respectful communication skills.

Preferred Experience
We'd be especially interested in candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Water-treatment, aquaculture, aquatic life-support, process-equipment, pump-skid, custom-equipment, or low-volume project-manufacturing experience.
  • Plastics welding or experience operating CNC and plastics-fabrication equipment.
  • Electrical-panel, controls, instrumentation, equipment-testing, crating, or field-installation experience.
  • Technical training through a trade school, vocational program, community college, apprenticeship, military program, manufacturer, or employer.
  • Experience onboarding, coaching, or serving as a technical resource for less-experienced employees.

What Success Looks Like
A successful Shop Technician II consistently produces safe, accurate, reliable work with limited supervision. You plan ahead, protect quality and revision control, surface problems early, and follow each assignment through testing, documentation, and cleanup. You're comfortable tackling difficult builds, supporting schedule recovery, and sharing your knowledge in a way that strengthens the entire production team.
If you enjoy building complex equipment, solving practical problems, and seeing the results of your work take shape on the shop floor, we'd like to hear from you.
Compensation: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
