Job description

Overview

We are designing the grid of the future! 

The Civil/Structural CAD Designer is responsible for developing detailed civil and structural drawings and construction deliverables for substation, transmission line, and renewable energy (BESS) projects. The primary focus of this role is structural drafting and detailing, including foundations, reinforced concrete, structural steel, equipment supports, and construction details.

The role will also support civil/site design activities, including coordination of grading, drainage, access roads, and site layouts. The ideal candidate has strong AutoCAD experience, structural drafting capability, and familiarity with Civil 3D and site development drawings.

Responsibilities

How you can make an impact:

  • Prepare structural design drawings, including foundation plans, structural layouts, sections, elevations, reinforcement details, anchor bolt layouts, and construction details.
  • Develop drawing packages for substations, transmission line structures, BESS facilities, equipment foundations, control buildings, gantries, equipment supports, and miscellaneous steel structures.
  • Draft reinforced concrete and structural steel details, including connection details, anchor bolts, support frames, and fabrication details.
  • Assist engineers with structural construction documents, foundation drawings, equipment support drawings, and detailed design packages.
  • Support civil/site drawing development, including site plans, grading plans, drainage layouts, access roads, ditches, culverts, and erosion and sediment control plans.
  • Use Civil 3D to assist with surface development, grading, profiles, drainage layouts, and earthwork quantities, as required.
  • Coordinate structural foundations and equipment supports with civil grading, drainage, site constraints, and electrical equipment layouts.
  • Review and interpret engineering markups, structural calculations, survey information, geotechnical reports, specifications, vendor drawings, fabrication drawings, and shop drawings.
  • Prepare and revise drawings based on internal reviews, client comments, vendor information, and construction feedback.
  • Ensure drawing compliance with project standards, local regulations, applicable codes, and industry practices.
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, and electrical teams to resolve design issues and maintain project schedules.
  • Maintain organized project files, drawing sets, revision tracking, and document control procedures.
  • Use AI and automation tools responsibly to improve drawing quality, productivity, and consistency.
Qualifications

Bring your passion, here's what's needed:

  • Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Structural Engineering Technology, Drafting Technology, Engineering Technology, or related industry experience.
  • 1-3+ years of experience in civil and/or structural drafting within the energy sector, including substations, transmission lines, BESS, renewable energy, or industrial infrastructure projects.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD, with emphasis on:
    • Structural drafting and detailing
    • Reinforced concrete and rebar drawings
    • Structural steel layouts and connection details
    • Foundation plans, anchor bolt layouts, and equipment support details
    • Structural construction drawings and detailed design packages
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Civil 3D, including site grading, surfaces, profiles, drainage layouts, and earthwork calculations.
  • Experience or familiarity with site plans, grading plans, drainage systems, access roads, ditches, culverts, and erosion control concepts.
  • Ability to review and interpret structural calculations, geotechnical reports, survey data, specifications, vendor drawings, shop drawings, and fabrication drawings.
  • Understanding of structural design principles for reinforced concrete, structural steel, foundations, and equipment support structures.
  • Ability to coordinate structural drawings with civil grading/drainage plans and electrical equipment layouts.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience leveraging AI and automation tools responsibly to improve quality, productivity and innovation

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting substation, transmission, renewable energy, BESS, or industrial infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with Bluebeam or similar document review software.
  • Familiarity with hydrology, drainage, and stormwater concepts for site coordination.
  • Experience preparing drawings for permitting, construction, and regulatory submissions.
  • Experience reviewing vendor, fabrication, and shop drawings.
