What is a shoot?

A 'Shoot' job typically refers to a role involved in the production of photography or video content. This can include photographers, camera operators, directors, lighting technicians, and other crew members who work on set to capture footage or images. These jobs are essential in industries like film, television, advertising, and fashion. Responsibilities often include setting up equipment, directing talent, managing lighting, and ensuring that the creative vision is executed effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a photographer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Photographer, you need a solid understanding of photographic techniques, composition, and lighting, usually supported by a portfolio and, in some cases, formal training or a degree in photography. Familiarity with DSLR or mirrorless cameras, photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom, and digital asset management systems is common. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills help photographers capture compelling images and work effectively with clients. These skills are essential for producing high-quality visual content, meeting client expectations, and succeeding in a competitive industry.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working as a shoot director or producer on set?

Shoot directors and producers often face challenges such as managing tight schedules, coordinating with large teams, and adapting to unforeseen changes like weather or equipment issues. Maintaining clear communication with crew members, talent, and clients is essential to ensure everyone is aligned with the creative vision and logistical plan. Balancing creative expectations with budget constraints can also be demanding, but these challenges help develop strong problem-solving and leadership skills over time.

Job description

WHO ARE WE?

Horsepower Automotive Group (HPAG) is a collection of aftermarket brands that are leaders in the off-road industry. We are looking for a Videographer/Photographer to join our growing team. When you join, you'll have a unique opportunity to be a part of our exciting and rapidly growing multi-brand organization. We support a collaborative environment and value open participation from individuals with different ideas, experiences, and perspectives. This role will work on multiple brands within our group.

Are you ready to be part of our future?

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly motivated, high output Videographer/Photographer with a strong background shooting and editing vehicles and outdoor industry content. You'll own projects from pre-production planning through final delivery, working alongside our product and marketing teams to feed the website, social media, and paid advertising campaigns.

We want an automotive enthusiast. The strongest candidates for this role live this stuff. They know what a build should look like, what angle makes a bumper look right, and why our customers care. If offroad trucks, Jeeps, Broncos, or overland rigs are already part of your life, you're the person we're looking for.

Travel is a real part of this job. You'll be on the road regularly for industry events, trade shows, media days, and dedicated content trips - including shoots on the trail and on location. Expect multi-day trips, early calls, long days in the field, and turning footage around quickly once you're back.

Responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Photograph products in a studio environment for the website, plus on vehicle media for the website and social
    • Contribute to pre shoot video ideation and planning
    • Capture necessary video and audio for the end project
    • Assemble video and audio clips into a cohesive end product
    • Edit with color grading and effects as needed for the desired result
    • Create or source titles, sounds, and other necessary assets
    • Create long form video content for technical purposes (installation guides) and marketing purposes (trade show and product feature videos)
    • Create short form video content for social media
    • Deliver a high volume of finished assets on deadline, often with several projects running at once
    • Travel to photograph and film industry events, media days, and content trips

Necessary Skills:

    • Experience with video editing software (specifically Premiere Pro & After Effects or Davinci Resolve)
    • Comfortable and efficient with camera, audio recording, and lighting equipment/techniques
    • Experience with photo editing software (mostly Lightroom for color grading)
    • Ability to juggle multiple active projects and shift priorities without losing deadlines
    • Strong time management and the ability to deliver complete, ready to use photos and videos
    • Willingness and availability to travel for events and content trips
    • Equipment is provided, but you're always welcome to bring your own in addition

Preferred Skills:

    • Professional experience shooting and editing video/audio/photo
    • Product-related videography/photography experience
    • Knowledge and genuine passion for the automotive, offroad, van, or overland industry
    • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with high output expectations
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills
    • Team player
