Job description

At Hood Container - Grand Rapids, MI we are looking for a Shipping Supervisor. This role is salaried role reporting to the Logistics Manager. You will be an integral part of our Shipping Management Team. Shipping Supervisor, you will be responsible for:

  • working with the Logistics Manager to identify priorities for the Logistics team
  • managing a team of forklift operators to perform the duties assigned to meet the priorities set
  • ensuring proper loading and unloading of trailers
  • ensuring that production lines are kept stocked and prepped to run
  • conducting cycle counts on a weekly basis
  • electronically verify hours worked by the Logistics team on a daily and weekly basis
  • approve vacation requests as workload dictates
  • ensure the warehouse area is kept clean and orderly
  • serving as a backup to other Logistics Manager.

What it Takes:

  • Five-years’ experience in a manufacturing and shipping environment required.
  • Ability to multi-task and produce accurate work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to supervise through coaching, inspiring employees to perform at their best.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact with a highly diverse environment.
  • Ability to retain technical information.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Products and experience with diverse shipping platforms. Experience with Amtech would be an advantage.
  • Self-starter and team player.
  • General high level of enthusiasm and creative ability.

  • Understand and adapt to a Coaching style of supervision, where guidance of the team and helping them understand the purpose of what we do and how we do it, gives them an understanding of their part in the goals of the department.
  • Hold the team accountable for the tasks they are assigned, making performance about the task and not the personality.
  • Support company and departmental policies and procedures by example, holding the team as accountable as yourself.
  • Maintain the highest levels in safety, quality and housekeeping standards.
  • Interact with customer service and production for smooth, total quality order shipments.
  • Process paperwork accurately for outgoing shipments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Oversee loading and unloading of trailers.
  • Protect and keep product free from damage.
  • Participate in monthly physical inventory procedures, even when that requires a Saturday.
  • Receive product with accuracy and on a timely basis in our Manufacturing & Shipping database - Amtech.
  • Perform all tasks assigned by the Shipping Manager.
