Position Description
Job Summary
The Utilities Excavator Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating excavators to install, maintain, and repair underground utility systems. This role requires precision around existing utilities, strong knowledge of utility construction practices, and a commitment to safety and quality
Key Responsibilities
    • Operate excavators and related equipment to dig trenches, pits, and backfill for utility installations
    • Perform excavation for water, sewer, storm utilities
    • Read and interpret utility plans, blueprints, and grade stakes
    • Work safely around existing underground utilities; pothole and daylight utilities as required
    • Coordinate with ground crew to ensure safe and accurate excavation
    • Perform daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance
    • Maintain proper trenching and shoring practices per OSHA standards
    • Assist with site preparation, grading, and cleanup
    • Follow all company safety policies and jobsite procedures
    • Communicate effectively with foremen, supervisors, and crew members
    • Maintain accurate production and equipment logs as required

Position Requirements
Required Qualifications
    • High school diploma or GED preferred
    • Minimum 2 years of experience operating excavators in utility construction
    • Strong knowledge of underground utility installation methods
    • Ability to operate equipment safely in tight or congested areas
    • Valid driver's license; CDL a plus
    • Knowledge of OSHA excavation and trench safety regulations
    • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and physically demanding environments

Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience with GPS machine control systems
    • Experience working on municipal or DOT utility projects
    • NCCER or equivalent equipment operator certification
    • First Aid / CPR certification

Physical Requirements
    • Work involves sitting, walking or standing for extended periods of time in various adverse weather conditions
    • Must be able to repeatedly lift and/or carry weights of five to fifty pounds
    • Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information
    • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination
    • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment, safety glasses, hard hat with chin strap, reflective safety vest, gloves, ear protection, face shield, safety toe boots
