What can I expect during a typical shadowing experience, and how should I make the most of this opportunity?

During a shadowing experience, you will observe a professional in their daily work environment, gaining firsthand insight into their responsibilities and workflow. While shadowing, you may attend meetings, watch how tasks are performed, and interact with team members, but you are generally not expected to perform tasks yourself. To maximize the benefits, come prepared with questions, take notes on key observations, and reflect on how the role aligns with your interests and career goals. Being proactive and respectful of the professional's time will help you build meaningful connections and gain valuable industry perspective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive during a shadowing experience, and why are they important?

To thrive during a shadowing experience, you should possess curiosity, a willingness to learn, and a basic understanding of the field you are observing. Familiarity with common workplace protocols and the ability to follow confidentiality guidelines are important, though formal certifications are usually not required. Strong observational skills, professionalism, and effective communication help you make the most of the experience and build positive relationships. These qualities are vital to maximizing learning opportunities, respecting workplace norms, and leaving a favorable impression for potential future opportunities.

What is a shadowing experience?

A shadowing experience is an opportunity for individuals, often students or those considering a new career, to observe a professional in their workplace. This allows the participant to gain firsthand insight into the daily responsibilities, work environment, and skills required for a particular job. Shadowing experiences are commonly used in fields like healthcare, education, and business to help people make informed career choices. They typically do not involve direct hands-on work but focus on observation and learning through real-world exposure.

Is 20 shadowing hours good enough?

For a shadowing experience related to a job, 20 hours can provide a basic understanding of the role and environment, but many programs recommend 40 hours or more for a comprehensive view. The adequacy of hours depends on the industry, the specific job, and the goals of the shadowing opportunity.

Job description

PetWow's Student Shadowing Experience is less formal than a PetWow Externship or PetWow's Summer Experience. But for that reason, it can often be arranged with less notice and can last anywhere from a single day to two weeks.

It is an ideal opportunity for students who have a few days for a visit between semesters or around the holidays, to gain real-world insights into the daily life of a PetWow veterinarian.

Visit www.petwowdvm.com to learn more about PetWow's Student Shadowing Experience, as well as all of the other student programs and career offerings at PetWow.

Requirements

    • Must be actively enrolled in a pre-veterinary program or graduate program ultimately in pursuit of a degree as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

  • Informal - Flexible Experience
    • A Shadowing Experience can often be arranged around a student's schedule and with minimal notice. It can last for as little as a single day or for as long as two weeks.
  • Meet the PetWow Team

  • Tour Facilities & Operations
    • A Shadowing Experience provides students an opportunity to survey PetWow facilities, equipment, treatment and product options.
  • Gain Valuable Clinical Insights
    • Most importantly, the student will be assigned to "shadow" a PetWow doctor where they will have opportunity to observe daily clinical activities and ask questions of an experienced PetWow clinician.
