Job description

Job Summary:
Basic Purpose
Responsible for directing the operation of the Milling, Intermediate, Primary and Quarry departments in all aspects of safety, health, productivity and environmental awareness.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure that employees follow the SGI company work rules, MSHA rules and regulations, State of Wisconsin and EPA regulations and conduct their behavior in a responsible and ethical manner.
  • Conduct and record monthly "Tool Box Talks" and any other required safety training.
  • Conduct and record job training, task training and equipment training including select mobile equipment training.
  • Monitor condition and operation of baghouses. Complete baghouse report and EPA Method 9 reporting.
  • Review mill report/notes from prior shift. Follow up on any issues.
  • Collect and review daily safety inspection cards (Blue Cards) from each assigned employee and respond to any concerns.
  • Conduct initial walk through and safety inspection. Check all machinery and equipment for proper operation and general condition. Report and correct issues.
  • Check housekeeping and general cleanliness of facilities.
  • Ensure that all employees complete their assigned cleaning and lubricating duties and properly fill out and turn in the corresponding paperwork.
  • Monitor lockout/tagout for employees working on equipment and ensure proper personal protective equipment use.
  • As required, check the position and condition of roll crusher tires. Adjust grates to direct feed if necessary. Record take-up measurements on each roll crusher.
  • Obtain report on screen conditions from screenman, and mill crusher condition from chief operator and mandate repairs.
  • Supervise and direct quarry operations, monitor quarry dewatering pump and resolve any problems that may arise in the quarry.
  • Direct maintenance on job priority and plan. Print out work orders using Maximo and make sure that jobs are completed. Call in additional mechanics or electricians if the need arises.
  • Submit any work requests to maintenance using Maximo.
  • As required, request and charge out parts from the stockroom.
  • Ensure screens being changed are replaced with the correct screen.
  • Direct adjustments to equipment as required to achieve tonnage rates as targeted.
  • Achieve and maintain quality by monitoring grading and directing process adjustment.
  • Slug and adjust cone crushers to specified settings.
  • Record and report shift total tonnages and issues including instances that effect tonnage and grading such as equipment breakdowns and hot roll bearings.
  • Direct mill, intermediate, primary and quarry personnel on problems related to production.
  • Answer outside phone line and communicate messages to appropriate party.
  • Supervise any firefighting efforts and replace any used fire extinguishers.
  • Call emergency personnel if warranted.
  • Administer first aid to injured employees to the best of your training.
  • Cover any overtime for positions in the milling and crushing operations that become open because of vacation, illness, call-in or no show.
  • Monitor and correct hourly employee timesheet in E-time.
  • Distribute paychecks to hourly employees.
  • Pass on hourly employee vacation/time off requests.
  • Fill out personal timecard and EWA report.
  • Attend all required meetings and training.
  • Execute the SGI disciplinary procedure as warranted.
  • Email management on issues and plant performance at the end of each shift.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
