We are seeking a Production Prototype Technician I / Industrial Sewing Machine Operator to join our team in our air-conditioned manufacturing facility located in Chandler, AZ. We need a person who can focus on quality while assembling products by hand that are made of various materials. The ideal candidate must have good hand dexterity, be willing to learn new tasks and equipment, and become a self-starter once trained. Someone that demonstrates the ability to translate complex 3D shapes into accurate 2D pattern pieces, by developing prototype patterns. This role requires experience in sewing in an industrial setting. (Training and instructions will be provided as needed, but the sewing ability must be at a proficient level.)

Job Specific Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the development of new product configurations and methods as required.
  • Operates industrial sewing machines used in prototype construction, selecting appropriate stitches, tensions, and machine settings to achieve functional prototypes following Engineering specifications.
  • Aids in initial production runs of new products and seeks opportunities to improve production runs.
  • Partners with Engineers, to convert hand-drafted patterns to production-ready cut files.
  • Collaborates with prototype development team to read and interpret engineering specifications for transfer to machine needs.
  • Follows all applicable standard operating procedures, work instructions, and R&D specifications.
  • Documents process steps to ensure future repeatability.
  • Utilize measuring instrumentation for dimensional verification, force testing, etc.
  • Interact, aid, and lead as needed, with production personnel to define and solve manufacturing/design issues and implement recommended cost reduction ideas.
  • Aid in scaling of products from process, training, and other supporting capacities as needed.
  • Assists manufacturing cells when needed for production of products.
  • Follow standard work methods and practice safe work habits following safety rules, ensures work areas are as efficient and safe as possible.
  • Notify the production manager and facilities when machines are not functioning properly.
  • Ensure conformance to specifications, stop non-conforming parts or products.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Production hands-on experience +2 year (required)
  • Must have strong working knowledge of industrial sewing machines
  • Experience with digital pattern-making tools. (preferred)
  • Familiarity with automated equipment. (preferred)
  • ISO, LEAN or other quality system experience. (preferred)
  • Ability to read and understand drawings (preferred)

The Production Worker I must demonstrate cognitive ability to follow directions and routines, work independently with appropriate judgment, exhibit spatial awareness, read words and numbers, concentrate, memorize, and recall, identify logical connections, and determine sequence of response and process up to 2-3 steps ahead. Ability to attend work on a regular, predictable and consistent basis and to commute to and from work safely and arrive at work on time.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to airborne particulates, moving mechanical parts and vibrations. The noise level can be loud at times. Physical Demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, and reach with hands and arms. This position involves a variety of repetitive processes such as insertion of materials, alignment by hand and rotating fixtures by hand. The position also involves sitting, talking and hearing throughout the day. The employee must also be able to safely lift up to 49 pounds or less repeatedly during the 8-10hour shift.
