Set Design Assistant information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Set Design Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Set Design Assistant, you need a solid grounding in art, design principles, and spatial awareness, often supported by a degree in theatre design or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as basic model-making and drafting skills, is typically required. Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving abilities help you collaborate effectively with designers, directors, and production crews. These skills ensure that creative visions are translated accurately and efficiently into practical, visually compelling sets that support the production.

What are Set Design Assistants?

Set Design Assistants are professionals who support set designers and production teams in creating the physical environments for film, television, theater, or events. Their responsibilities include helping with research, sourcing materials, creating models or sketches, and assisting with the construction and dressing of sets. They play a key role in ensuring sets meet the creative vision and practical needs of a production, often working closely with various departments and under tight deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced by a Set Design Assistant and how can they be effectively managed?

Set Design Assistants often encounter tight deadlines and rapidly changing design requirements, which can make managing tasks and communication challenging. To succeed, it's important to stay highly organized, regularly communicate with the set designer and other team members, and be adaptable to last-minute changes. Proactively seeking clarification on assignments and maintaining detailed notes can help ensure that the designer's vision is accurately realized. Building strong working relationships with the construction and props teams also supports smoother workflow and problem-solving on set.

Job description

We are seeking a highly organized, hands-on Design Assistant for our Kids' Department. This role is perfect for a technical and detail-driven professional who loves seeing a garment move from initial sketch to final physical product. You will be responsible for building tech packs, managing trims, organizing samples, and working directly with fabric vendors and sewing teams. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and love the technical, production-focused side of children’s fashion, we want to hear from you.

What You Will Do

  • Tech Pack Creation: Build detailed, accurate technical packets from scratch, ensuring all design specs and construction details are clear.
  • Set Up BOMs: Create and maintain comprehensive Bills of Materials (BOM) for every style, tracking all fabrics, linings, and components.
  • Trim Sheets & Organization: Design clear trim sheets and physically organize the trim library, ensuring production teams have exact buttons, zippers, and labels.
  • Garment Tagging: Manage physical sample archives by tagging garments accurately with style numbers, seasons, and approval statuses.
  • Sewing & Factory Quality Checks: Regularly check sewers and work with the production room floor to ensure stitching, construction, and safety standards are met.
  • Fabric Appointments: Assist with vendor fabric appointments, sourcing appropriate textiles, organizing swatches, and tracking sample yardage.
  • Cross-Functional Support: Coordinate closely with patternmakers, sewers, and product developers to keep production on schedule.

What We Are Looking For

  • Experience: 1 to 2 years of professional experience in apparel design, production assistance, or technical design (children's wear experience is a plus).
  • Technical Mastery: Proven experience building complete tech packs and BOMs. Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Excel is required.
  • Hands-on Production Skills: Strong understanding of garment construction, sewing techniques, and pattern layout to accurately review sewing quality.
  • Extreme Organization: A systematic approach to tagging garments, managing physical trims, and keeping libraries organized.
  • Vendor & Team Communication: Professional demeanor for assisting in fabric vendor appointments and collaborating directly with sample sewers.

Why Join Us?

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
  • Opportunities for growth in both design and production management.
