Job description

Our organization, a prominent clinical and educational institution serving as the teaching hospital for our medical and nursing colleges, is seeking applications for the role of Director of Primary Care Service Line.

The Director of Primary Care Service Line will act as the lead physician for our primary care division, dedicating half of their time to administrative leadership and the other half to clinical practice. This position involves collaborating with the administrative Executive Director to establish strategic goals, enhance operational performance, and promote clinical excellence throughout the network. The Director will lead a team of regional medical directors and work closely with committed administrative support to influence the future of primary care delivery at a major academic medical center.

Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership & Operations
  • Direct the strategic planning for service line growth and operational initiatives, including clinical pathways and business priorities, in partnership with the Executive Director, regional physician leaders, and departmental administration.
  • Establish and oversee service line governance alongside the Executive Director, creating a structure of regional medical directors that facilitates consistent escalation, delegated decision-making, and accountability across the network.
  • Manage essential performance metrics, such as patient volumes, satisfaction, and access.
  • Lead the development and implementation of new clinical services.
  • Assist in integrating care systems across current and future affiliated sites.
Financial Management & Business Development
  • Prepare and oversee the annual budget for the service line in collaboration with the Executive Director.
  • Monitor financial performance and identify opportunities for margin improvement, including growth, revenue enhancement, and cost reduction initiatives.
  • Supervise managed care activities and lead the faculty recruitment process; collaborate with the Executive Director to create financial models for revenue and activity projections.
Quality & Compliance
  • Ensure adherence to state and federal laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures that align with medical center guidelines and comply with HCFA, Joint Commission, and Corporate Compliance.
  • Lead performance improvement initiatives and educational programs, monitor healthcare service quality, and coordinate risk mitigation efforts.
  • Implement policies and procedures for patient safety and quality assurance.
  • Maintain a patient-centered focus by exemplifying strong patient and family relations, customer satisfaction, and clinical outcomes.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, department Chairs, and strategic planning teams to develop the annual board report, budgetary volume projections, and new strategic growth initiatives, including technology selection and faculty recruitment.
  • Act as the physician dyad partner with the Executive Director for the primary care service line, jointly managing service line strategy, performance, and culture, while overseeing a network of regional medical directors.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with corporate compliance to ensure ongoing adherence to all state and federal regulations.
  • Encourage a positive work environment that promotes open communication, independent thinking, and service excellence, while actively participating in performance improvement activities and educational program implementation.
  • Engage with regional and national experts to share information, experiences, practices, and research.
  • Collaborate with Faculty & Provider Recruitment to attract and retain high-quality physicians and advanced practice providers.
Qualifications
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) required
  • Board Certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or Internal Medicine-Pediatrics
  • Current, unrestricted medical license (or eligibility) in Illinois
  • At least 8 years of progressive experience in a health system or academic medical center
  • Minimum of 2 years of management experience
  • Preferred significant exposure to service lines in both inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Demonstrated marketing skills, analytical abilities, and business acumen
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint)
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities and capacity to collaborate with physician leaders
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, both independently and as part of a team
