A server is someone who works in a restaurant, providing customer service to restaurant patrons. Servers are responsible for greeting customers, taking orders, bringing their food and drinks, and clearing their plates when finished. They work long shifts on their feet and must be able to work under pressure.

What are some common challenges servers face during peak hours, and how can they effectively manage them?

During busy meal times, servers often handle multiple tables, special requests, and time-sensitive orders simultaneously. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, clear communication with kitchen staff and fellow servers, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Many successful servers use strategies like prioritizing tasks, using order pads effectively, and checking in with guests regularly to ensure smooth service and customer satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a server, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Server, you need strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, typically with a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and basic food safety or alcohol service certifications are often required. Exceptional communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help servers create positive dining experiences and handle guest concerns gracefully. These skills ensure efficient service, satisfied guests, and contribute to the overall success of the restaurant.

Job description

Server:

Our Servers are hospitality professionals responsible for creating a welcoming, energetic, and sales-focused guest experience. While great service is always the foundation of the role, successful servers also understand the importance of building guest relationships, guiding dining decisions, and maximizing sales opportunities through genuine hospitality and strong menu knowledge.

We are looking for team members who are personable, confident, organized, and motivated to succeed in a fast-paced environment. The right candidate understands that exceptional service and strong sales performance go hand in hand. This position requires multitasking, urgency, professionalism, and the ability to remain calm and positive during busy periods.

This is an active position that requires standing and walking for extended periods, carrying trays and beverages, lifting up to 25–50 pounds, and maintaining continuous movement throughout the restaurant. Team members may assist with additional restaurant tasks as needed to support daily operations and guest service standards. Responsibilities may evolve based on business needs and team support.

• Supportive Team Environment

• Opportunities to Grow Into Training and Leadership Roles

Server Requirements:

• Prior serving or hospitality experience is preferred, but personality, reliability, and work ethic matter most

• Strong communication and guest engagement skills

• Ability to multitask and maintain organization in a fast-paced environment

• Comfortable handling cash and payment transactions responsibly

• Strong teamwork mentality and professional attitude

• Ability to confidently recommend menu items, promotions, and add-on sales opportunities

• Positive, energetic, and hospitality-focused personality

• Flexible availability, including weekends and holidays as needed

• Bilingual English/Spanish candidates are strongly encouraged to apply

Responsibilities:

• Greet, seat, and serve guests in a friendly, attentive, and professional manner

• Guide guests through menu selections and provide knowledgeable recommendations

• Identify opportunities to increase sales through suggestive selling, add-ons, beverages, desserts, and promotional items

• Accurately take food and beverage orders using restaurant systems and procedures

• Deliver food and beverages promptly while maintaining presentation and service standards

• Communicate clearly with kitchen staff and management to ensure smooth service flow

• Monitor guest satisfaction throughout the dining experience and proactively resolve issues when possible

• Process guest payments accurately and responsibly

• Maintain cleanliness and organization of tables, service stations, and dining areas

• Support fellow team members during busy periods to maintain strong overall restaurant performance

• Help create a positive, high-energy atmosphere for guests and coworkers alike

We are a family-operated franchise group that believes great restaurants are built by great teams. We value hospitality, professionalism, communication, accountability, and team members who take pride in both guest experience and personal performance. We believe strong service and strong sales come from genuine connections, confidence, and consistent execution.

Since 1958, IHOP® has been the place where people connect over breakfast, enjoy study breaks, grab a bite before or after sporting events, and so much more. And no matter what menu items they order, there’s one ingredient that’s always constant — a smile. We’ve seen millions of smiles over the years in our restaurants, and now shared in photos across our social properties. In fact, smiles are so much a part of our culture that we changed our logo to include one.
This is just one of the many fun and exciting changes you can expect from IHOP®. Because we know the shortest distance between two people is a smile. –
