What is a server?

A server is someone who works in a restaurant, providing customer service to restaurant patrons. Servers are responsible for greeting customers, taking orders, bringing their food and drinks, and clearing their plates when finished. They work long shifts on their feet and must be able to work under pressure.

What are some common challenges servers face during peak hours, and how can they effectively manage them?

During busy meal times, servers often handle multiple tables, special requests, and time-sensitive orders simultaneously. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, clear communication with kitchen staff and fellow servers, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Many successful servers use strategies like prioritizing tasks, using order pads effectively, and checking in with guests regularly to ensure smooth service and customer satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a server, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Server, you need strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, typically with a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and basic food safety or alcohol service certifications are often required. Exceptional communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help servers create positive dining experiences and handle guest concerns gracefully. These skills ensure efficient service, satisfied guests, and contribute to the overall success of the restaurant.

Job description

At The Queen's Cue and Crescent Hotels & Resorts, we are a team of hospitality professionals that are deeply connected to & proud of the exceptional experiences we provide for our guests. More than that, we know our Associates are the shining stars of what we do!

We understand what it takes to be a part of something great. We will encourage you to bring your true self to work every day, we will celebrate you and we will cheer you on as you shine bright in your career journey. Whether it be our health & wellness programs, best in class learning and development or our travel discounts that ‘feed your inner explorer’, we work hard to create and deliver on what YOU need. We are ready for you to start your journey with us where You Belong. We Care. Shine Bright.

Job Summary

The Queen’s Cue, a Marriott Tribute Portfolio Hotel, is seeking polished, engaging, and service-driven Courtiers - Servers to join our Food & Beverage team in Stratford.

At The Queen’s Cue and the Boar’s Head Pub, our Courtiers are the familiar faces who bring warmth, personality, and a sense of occasion to the table. Historically, a Courtier was a trusted member of a royal household who attended court, welcomed and entertained guests, and was known for their social grace, attentiveness, and understanding of those around them - a fitting namesake for the team responsible for looking after our guests throughout their dining experience.

From lively evenings in the Boar’s Head Pub to intimate dinners, celebrations, and special events, you will guide guests through their experience with confidence and personality. You will share the stories behind what we serve, make thoughtful recommendations, anticipate what a table may need next, and help create the warm, polished, and personal style of service that defines The Queen’s Cue.

This is more than taking orders and delivering plates. Our Courtiers help create the connection between the guest, the food, and the experience - knowing when to engage, when to offer guidance, and when simply to let the moment unfold.

Does this sound like you?

You are confident, personable, and naturally attentive. You enjoy connecting with people and have an instinct for reading a table - knowing when guests want conversation, when they need guidance, and when they simply want to enjoy the moment.

Your day may include welcoming guests to your section, presenting menus and daily features, taking food and beverage orders, making recommendations, processing payments, and monitoring the pace and quality of the experience from beginning to end. You will also support private functions, hotel events, and other Food & Beverage operations as needed.

You take pride in knowing the menu, understanding the story behind what we serve, and helping guests discover something they may not have chosen on their own. You are comfortable discussing food, cocktails, wine, and beer, and understand that thoughtful recommendations should feel genuine rather than scripted.

When service becomes busy, you remain composed, organized, and aware of the entire table rather than just the next task. You communicate clearly with the kitchen and wider Front of House team, respond quickly when something needs attention, and are always willing to step in where needed to keep service moving.

Above all, you understand that great service has a rhythm of its own - polished without being formal, attentive without being intrusive, and personal enough that guests leave feeling genuinely known.

What We Offer

  • An exceptional benefit plan for eligible associates and your family members.
  • RRSP matching program for eligible associates.
  • Flexible scheduling to support work-life balance.
  • Starting hourly rate of $18.00 per hour, plus applicable gratuities.
  • Discounts at Crescent-managed properties across North America and Marriott hotels worldwide for you and your family members.
  • 50% dining discount at The Queen’s Cue and the Boar’s Head Pub.
  • A workplace you can be proud of, where you are valued, trusted, and supported by the team.

Qualifications

  • Previous serving experience in a restaurant, hotel, pub, or similar hospitality environment is considered a strong asset.
  • Valid Smart Serve certification is required.
  • Valid Food Handler Certification is required.
  • Strong knowledge of food and beverage service, with the confidence to discuss menu items and make thoughtful recommendations.
  • Ability to take and process orders accurately using a POS system.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a warm, professional, and guest-focused approach.
  • Ability to manage multiple tables and priorities while maintaining attentive and consistent service.
  • Confidence processing guest payments and following established cash-handling procedures.
  • Ability to monitor guest satisfaction and respond promptly and professionally to requests or concerns.
  • Strong attention to cleanliness, presentation, and organization throughout service.
  • Willingness to support private functions, hotel events, setup and breakdown, and other Food & Beverage operations as required.
  • Ability to safely stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift, move, carry, and place items weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • A collaborative approach and willingness to support fellow team members throughout service.
  • Flexibility to work daytime, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

We welcome applications from people with disabilities. Accommodations are available upon request for candidates taking part in all aspects of the selection process. This posting represents a current vacancy and Crescent Hotels & Resorts does not use artificial intelligence to screen, assess, and/or select applicants.

At Crescent Hotels & Resorts we strive to create a great place to work where associates at all levels of our organization are respected for their differences, just like the guests and owners we serve. That’s why we are dedicated to creating an environment that facilitates open and honest conversations about race, equity, diversity, and inclusion. By examining our own beliefs and behaviors, we can create change through training, recruiting, and promoting diverse talent to strengthen our culture.
