What is a Serdes application engineer?

Serdes Application Engineers are specialized professionals who focus on designing, implementing, and supporting serializer/deserializer (SerDes) technologies in high-speed data communication systems. They work closely with hardware design teams and customers to ensure that SerDes components are properly integrated and optimized for performance, signal integrity, and reliability. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting signal issues, developing test strategies, and providing technical support for SerDes solutions across industries such as data centers, telecommunications, and consumer electronics.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Serdes application engineer?

To thrive as a Serdes Application Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, signal integrity, and high-speed serial interface protocols such as PCIe or Ethernet, typically with a relevant degree. Familiarity with simulation tools (e.g., SPICE, IBIS-AMI), lab equipment (oscilloscopes, BERTs), and industry standards is crucial. Excellent problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams help you stand out. These skills are vital for ensuring robust Serdes solutions, supporting customers, and driving successful product integration in advanced electronic systems.

What are common challenges faced by Serdes application engineers when supporting customer integrations?

Serdes Application Engineers often encounter challenges such as debugging high-speed signal integrity issues, adapting solutions for diverse customer platforms, and interpreting complex protocol standards. They frequently work closely with customers' hardware and firmware teams to resolve interoperability problems, requiring strong communication and technical troubleshooting skills. Staying current with evolving Serdes technologies and standards is also essential, as customers may implement cutting-edge designs that push the limits of performance.

What is the difference between Serdes Application Engineer vs FPGA Design Engineer?

Job description

Overview

SerDes Applications Engineer. Broadcom announced the Tomahawk® 6 switch series delivering a world’s first 102.4 Terabits/sec of switching capacity in a single chip, doubling the bandwidth of Ethernet switches. Tomahawk 6 provides unprecedented scale, energy efficiency, and AI-optimized features, with support for 100G/200G SerDes and co-packaged optics (CPO). Broadcom's Core Switching Group (CSG) is seeking a SerDes Applications Engineer with expertise in serial IO to support Tier 1 customers at the cutting edge, including 200Gbps per lane PAM4 Ethernet interfaces and 64 GT/s PCIe Gen6 interfaces.

Responsibilities
  • Own all technical aspects related to the SerDes interfaces of Broadcom CSG products across markets including Service Provider, Data Center, and Enterprise.
  • Provide technical support on architecture and low-level hardware questions and issues.
  • Respond to field and customer questions in a timely manner.
  • Replicate field issues in the lab using reference designs and test equipment.
  • Troubleshoot challenging hardware issues associated with high-speed SerDes interfaces.
  • Perform customer demos and presentations upon request.
  • Develop and maintain documentation and supporting collateral.
  • Provide expert-level support to the Field Applications Engineering organization globally.
  • Thoroughly understand the SerDes architecture of the products and the detailed datapath flows through the MAC, PCS, and PMD of various Ethernet Serdes Port Macros.
  • Collaborate with engineering, software development, architecture, and marketing teams to develop collateral and training materials for CSG products.
  • Debug SerDes software driver issues.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S./M.S. in Electrical/Computer Engineering (or similar degree).
  • 8+ years of experience working with high-speed SerDes and Analog IP.
  • Solid understanding of high-speed SerDes architecture.
  • Hands-on experience with high-speed debugging and characterization.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with script-based test automation and general scripting skills.
  • Solid understanding of channel loss, jitter, and typical impairments in high-speed serial IO designs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with PCIe, including Gen6.
  • Experience with 100/200 Gbps per lane Ethernet interfaces.
  • Hands-on debugging with high-speed oscilloscopes and BERTs.
