Job Description
The Waste Disposal Attendant is a dual-role field position responsible for safely operating heavy-duty commercial tanker vehicles to collect and transport liquid waste to disposal facilities while also delivering, servicing, cleaning, and retrieving portable sanitation units. This primarily overnight role follows scheduled routes, works closely with dispatch, maintains full regulatory and safety compliance, and provides professional, customer-focused service on every stop.
Responsibilities
- Operate heavy-duty commercial tanker waste collection vehicles safely and efficiently on assigned overnight routes.
- Collect and transport liquid waste to approved disposal facilities in accordance with all applicable regulations and company procedures.
- Deliver, set up, service, clean, and pick up portable sanitation units as scheduled by dispatch, ensuring they meet cleanliness and service standards.
- Perform thorough daily pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections of vehicles and equipment, documenting any issues and coordinating with dispatch or maintenance as needed.
- Maintain accurate and timely paperwork, including manifests, route logs, and service documentation, using field service mobile applications and dispatch systems.
- Communicate proactively with dispatch regarding route progress, schedule changes, customer needs, equipment concerns, and special service runs.
- Respond to customer service requests and special service runs as needed, addressing concerns and resolving issues in a professional and courteous manner.
- Follow all safety protocols and procedures at all times, including the consistent use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Work comfortably in sanitation environments, including exposure to waste, odors, chemicals, sludge, noxious fumes, dust, mists, gases, and other related materials.
- Navigate large vehicles through tight residential and commercial roads, driveways, and confined areas while maintaining safe driving practices.
- Participate in a structured 4-week on-call rotation, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and respond to after-hours service needs when scheduled.
- Support cross-training efforts across related service lines as needed, contributing to broader operational coverage and flexibility.
- Take ownership of assigned vehicle, route, and equipment, ensuring cleanliness, readiness, and compliance with all company and regulatory standards.
- Work independently on overnight routes with minimal supervision, managing time effectively to complete all assigned stops and tasks.
Essential Skills
- Active CDL Class B or Class A license required, with CDL A preferred due to broader vehicle eligibility.
- Clean motor vehicle record with no DUI/OUI, reckless driving, hit and run, active suspension, or 10 or more accumulated points within the past 3 years.
- Air brake endorsement required.
- Tanker endorsement required, with willingness to obtain it prior to start if not already held.
- 2+ years of experience operating a commercial vehicle preferred, with CDL tenure evaluated based on experience.
- Demonstrated experience in waste transport, disposal, or related hauling operations, including comfort working around waste, odors, chemicals, and sludge.
- Experience delivering, servicing, and cleaning portable sanitation units or similar equipment, or a strong willingness to learn.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with dispatch and follow route schedules, including overnight and route-based work.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and push up to 175 pounds, with physical stamina to perform labor-intensive tasks throughout the shift.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Reliability, self-direction, and strong ownership of work, with the ability to operate independently on overnight routes.
- Comfort working consistent overnight hours and participating in an on-call rotation including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Background in septic pumping, roll-off hauling, garbage collection, or environmental services is highly transferable and preferred.
- Experience in industrial cleaning, hydrovac operation, or similar field service roles is beneficial.
- Familiarity with field service mobile applications and dispatch systems is preferred.
- Route driving experience in tight residential or commercial environments is a plus.
- Knowledge of waste regulations and disposal requirements is advantageous.
- Experience with sanitation, cleaning, and industrial cleaning processes is beneficial.
- Exposure to hazmat environments and related safety practices is a plus.
- OSHA 10 certification preferred but not required.
- Experience with machine operation, heavy equipment operation, or tanker operation is advantageous.
- Willingness to cross-train across other service lines and responsibilities.
- Strong customer service mindset with the ability to interact professionally with residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers.
- Comfort working in or around confined spaces, following all safety procedures and training.

Work Environment
The position is a field-based, overnight role operating primarily across the Evansville and Southern Indiana region on scheduled routes. The standard shift runs from approximately 12:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., with route-based flexibility and occasional overnight travel depending on scheduling needs. Work is performed year-round in all weather conditions and involves operating heavy-duty commercial tanker vehicles and servicing portable sanitation units at various residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal locations. You will regularly encounter liquid waste, odors, chemicals, sludge, noxious fumes, dust, mists, gases, and other sanitation-related materials, and may perform work in or around confined spaces. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times, and strict adherence to safety protocols is expected. The role operates largely independently with minimal direct supervision, while still reporting closely to dispatch and participating in a structured 4-week on-call rotation that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.
