What is SEO?

SEO or search engine optimization is the process of generating marketing results for a company or website through various forms of paid and non paid advertising. While the actual marketing content takes a variety of shapes, ranging from blogs and how-to guides to infographics, videos, product pages, and anything else that may be relevant to a company, SEO focuses on improving the ranking of this material in organic search results. SEO also involves using analytics software to determine which advertising techniques are most successful. Once a company has this information, it can start producing more content of that type, with the ultimate goal of improving its advertisements over time.

What does an SEO specialist do?

An SEO (Search Engine Optimization) specialist is responsible for improving a website's visibility in search engine results pages. They analyze, review, and implement changes to websites to optimize them for search engines like Google. This involves researching keywords, creating quality content, optimizing website structure, building backlinks, and monitoring performance metrics. The goal is to drive more organic (unpaid) traffic to the site and improve its ranking in search results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SEO specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SEO Specialist, you need expertise in keyword research, on-page and off-page optimization, analytics, and a solid understanding of search engine algorithms, usually backed by experience or certifications in digital marketing. Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, SEMrush, Ahrefs, and Google Search Console is essential for monitoring and improving website performance. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication make an SEO professional stand out. These abilities are vital for driving organic traffic, improving search rankings, and delivering measurable results to clients or organizations.

What are some common challenges faced by SEO specialists when working with cross-functional teams?

SEO specialists often collaborate with web developers, content creators, and marketing teams, which can present communication and alignment challenges. For example, implementing technical SEO recommendations may require developers to prioritize tasks that compete with other projects. Additionally, aligning content strategy with SEO goals sometimes involves negotiating with writers and editors to balance creativity and keyword optimization. Building strong relationships and clearly communicating the value of SEO can help overcome these obstacles and drive better results for the organization.

Job description

Organic Search Strategist

Our mission at 97th Floor is to elevate people and brands we believe in. That's what we're focused on when we help our clients meet their marketing goals and lead people to brands and products they need.

You'll thrive here if you're motivated to do work you're proud of, you enjoy close collaboration, and you're naturally curious about how search engines and AI search actually work.

We've partnered with companies like AT&T, Oatly, eos, and Zoom. And now we're looking for someone who wants to own organic search strategy with curiosity, motivation, and genuine excitement to learn.

What You'll Do

Work on a team with a content marketer, advertiser, designer, and your manager — the account director. Your team works with about 7-10 clients. You will take ownership of organic search strategy for your client accounts, including:

  • Content Strategy
  • Technical Fixes
  • Internal Linking
  • Backlink Acquisition
  • Results Tracking and Monitoring

Content Strategy

  • Own query research for your accounts: keyword research (Watch/Win/Invest), AI prompt research, and content mapping recommendations — including flagging AI prompts with no strong content match and recommending what to build.
  • Conduct a comprehensive keyword review (competitive content gap plus existing rankings) at the start of every new client contract to prioritize topics from day one.
  • Identify content consolidation opportunities — spotting keyword/AI prompt cannibalization and duplicate or outdated content that should be removed or merged to improve crawl efficiency.
  • Keep your strategic and technical knowledge updated by constantly learning about new marketing trends, algorithm changes, and platform/channel updates, including AI-driven search.

Technical Fixes

  • Conduct Full Technical Audits at minimum every 6 months and at the start of every contract, so technical issues are resolved before optimized content goes live.
  • Own the cadence of ongoing technical monitoring, and deliver clear, actionable technical recommendations to development.

Internal Linking

  • Own internal link audits, recommending new linking opportunities with strategic anchor text and surrounding copy for easy implementation.

Backlink Acquisition

  • Own backlink strategy for your accounts: how many links should be built to a given target URL, anchor text approach (exact match vs. non-exact), and outreach recommendations for potential referring sites — applying quality-assurance standards and tracking link impact via STAT annotation.

Results Tracking and Monitoring

  • Monitor results across STAT, Ahrefs, Google Search Console, and GA4 on the recommended cadence, and raise it when a strategy isn't working.
  • Own monthly client reporting in Google Data Studio.
  • Achieve target search results through account monitoring, testing, and collaborating with your team on how to adjust strategy.
  • Lead client communication for your work — walking clients through strategy, execution, and progress.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing or a related field (preferred, not required)
  • 2-3 years of experience in SEO or organic search
  • Working knowledge of Google Analytics (GA4), Google Search Console, and Looker Studio
  • Experience with keyword and site auditing tools such as Ahrefs, SEMrush, Screaming Frog, or Moz
  • Proficiency with Excel/Google Sheets for data organization and analysis
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to turn performance data into an actionable strategy
  • Adaptability — comfortable pivoting strategy to fit different clients, audiences, and industries
  • Self-starter who is always trying to learn more in an ever-changing environment

Benefits

Healthcare

  • Medical: 75% paid for employees; 50% for dependents
  • Dental: 75% paid for employees; 50% for dependents
  • Vision: 75% paid for employees; 50% for dependents
  • Life Insurance: 100% paid by 97th Floor (coverage = 1x salary, up to $350,000)

Savings + Retirement

  • HSA with up to $150/month match (rolls over and is yours permanently)
  • FSA option for dependent care
  • 401(k) with up to 4% company match

ROWE (Results Only Work Environment)

You're always welcome in our Lehi office (coworkers + snacks!), but you choose when you come in.
