What is an SEO program manager?

An SEO Program Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing and coordinating a company's search engine optimization (SEO) strategies and initiatives. They manage large-scale SEO projects, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and set goals to improve organic search rankings and website traffic. Their responsibilities often include developing SEO roadmaps, monitoring performance metrics, and ensuring that SEO best practices are integrated across all digital marketing efforts. The role requires both technical SEO knowledge and strong project management skills to drive business growth through improved online visibility.

How does an SEO program manager typically collaborate with other teams to achieve search performance goals?

As an SEO Program Manager, you’ll work closely with content creators, web developers, and marketing teams to align SEO strategies with broader business objectives. This involves leading cross-functional meetings to set priorities, sharing keyword trends, ensuring technical SEO best practices are implemented, and monitoring the impact of changes. Effective communication and project management skills are essential, as you’ll often translate SEO requirements into actionable tasks for different teams. Regular progress updates and joint troubleshooting sessions help ensure everyone is working toward shared performance targets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SEO program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SEO Program Manager, you need expertise in search engine optimization strategies, data analysis, and project management, typically supported by a degree in marketing or a related field. Familiarity with SEO tools like Google Analytics, SEMrush, Ahrefs, and experience with content management systems and web analytics platforms is essential. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate across teams and drive SEO initiatives forward. These skills are crucial for increasing organic search visibility, optimizing website performance, and achieving measurable business growth.

Job description

SEO Specialist
Bill Colwell Ford and Colwell Motors of Mason City are looking for an SEO Specialist to take ownership of the organic search performance across our dealership websites. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing dealership group and make a measurable impact on our business. You'll be responsible for improving our visibility in Google Search, Google Maps, and emerging AI-powered search platforms, helping customers find us when they're shopping for a vehicle, scheduling service, ordering parts, or researching their next purchase. If you're analytical, naturally curious, enjoy solving problems, and love seeing measurable results from your work, we'd love to meet you.
What You'll Do
  • Develop and execute our SEO strategy across multiple dealership websites.
  • Research keywords and identify opportunities to increase organic traffic.
  • Optimize page titles, meta descriptions, headings, internal links, and website content.
  • Improve rankings for vehicle sales, service, parts, financing, and local search terms.
  • Monitor website health, indexing, crawlability, Core Web Vitals, and site speed.
  • Implement and maintain structured data (schema markup).
  • Identify technical SEO issues and coordinate improvements with our website provider.
  • Manage and optimize Google Business Profiles and online business listings.
  • Improve visibility in Google Maps and local search results.
  • Create and optimize landing pages, service pages, FAQs, and other SEO-focused website content.
  • Monitor website performance using Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and other SEO tools.
  • Track rankings, traffic, and lead generation while identifying opportunities for continued growth.
  • Analyze competitor performance and share recommendations with dealership leadership.

What We're Looking For
  • A degree in Marketing, Communications, Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or a related field-or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of SEO principles and search engine best practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written communication and attention to detail.
  • The ability to learn new technology and adapt to Google's evolving search landscape.
  • A self-motivated mindset with the ability to manage projects independently.

Bonus Points
  • Experience with Google Analytics and Google Search Console.
  • Experience managing Google Business Profiles.
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, or website structure.
  • Experience using SEO tools such as Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz, or BrightLocal.
  • Experience with schema markup, Core Web Vitals, or technical SEO.
  • Experience working with dealership websites or automotive marketing.

Why Join Our Team?
You'll have the opportunity to own the SEO strategy for a growing dealership group. Your work will directly impact website traffic, lead generation, vehicle sales, service appointments, and business growth.
Unlike working at an agency, you'll see the results of your work firsthand and have the freedom to recommend new ideas, test strategies, and continuously improve our websites. We're committed to staying ahead of the evolving search landscape-including AI-powered search-and we're looking for someone who's excited to grow alongside us.
