Job description

Sentara Medical Group is currently seeking a Site Chief Hospitalist for Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, VA. Sentara Leigh Hospital is part of the Sentara Medical Group ( SMG ) Division of Hospital Medicine ( Chief Hospitalist ) who reports to the SMG Clinical Chief of Hospital Medicine and the facility VPMA, and provides leadership to the Hospitalist program in their facility. The focus of this position will be on development of a cutting edge hospitalist practice and associated physician recruitment and retention. This position involves active participation in the development of long and short-range plans, services, and strategies to achieve facility goals. Provision of clinical services will be required in one s area of expertise.


Responsibilities:
1. Collaborates with SMG and hospital administration leadership in defining, developing and implementing strategy, goals and objectives for their Hospital Medicine program. Provides leadership and guidance to program activities and assures timely accomplishment of defined goals while maximizing the effective use of resources.
2. Available to serve on appropriate strategic and operational committees in order to provide direction and expertise as needed.
3. In conjunction with the VPMA,
1. Ensures superior clinical and operational performance management within the facility
2. Develops and implements staffing models
3. Develops and implements co-management agreements with ED and specialty providers
4. Leads efforts to optimize communication with nursing, ICMs, and specialties.
5. Ensures appropriate documentation and coding among providers.
4. In conjunction with the Clinical Chief and Director of Operations,
1. Participates in the recruitment of professionals, participating in the selection interview and selection process.
2. Development and implementation of clinical and operational training
3. Participates in the development of performance measures
5. Responsible for personnel management of hospitalist staff, to include recruiting, interviewing, hiring, orientation, supervision, annual performance appraisals, and monitoring professional growth and development.
6. Directs the efficient and cost-effective management of the SMG Division of Hospital Medicine. Supports and implements SMG policies and procedures.
7. Provides professional input into the development of clinical protocols/pathways and order sets relevant to the practice of Hospital Medicine.
8. Coordinates the planning and provision of continuing education related to Hospital Medicine, in accordance with SMG policies and procedures.
9. Serves as a resource for medical staff, clinicians and the community regarding Hospital Medicine practice and provision of care
10. Participates in professional activities including association meetings, seminars, workshops, symposia, and review of current professional literature.
11. Responsible for scheduling and coverage for hospitalist shifts and approval of paid time off for hospitalist staff.
12. Responsible for participation in policies and procedures for compliance with JCAHO and other regulatory agencies and application of consistent quality patient care standards.
13. Assure patient continuity of care through excellent communication with patients primary care physicians and other referring physicians.
14. Coordinates hospitalists participation on various hospital committees.
15. Responsible for enhancing referral base and growth of Hospital Medicine through communication and marketing efforts within the physician community.
16. Responsible for monitoring patient and referring physician satisfaction and addressing any issues or complaints about the hospitalist service.
17. Chair regularly scheduled meetings to maintain and enhance communication flow and address necessary concerns for the department.
18. Maintain knowledge of current changes and trends affecting hospitalist programs. Responsible for making adjustments to program structure and delivery of patient care as changes occur in health care industry.
19. Demonstrate knowledge and support for the mission vision and values of SMG and SHC.
20. In collaboration with Director, develops the budget and monitors financial status and progress, assessing efficiency and growth potential of the program on an ongoing basis.
21. Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with Vice President of Medical Affairs to address necessary current clinical and/or departmental issues.

23. Serves as a spokesperson and ambassador for the SMG Division of Hospital Medicine.
24. By example, leads the team in a culture of clinical excellence and exemplary service to patients and other physicians.
25. Serves on the Sentara Hospital Medicine High Performance Team.


Qualifications:
1. Graduate of an accredited medical or osteopathic medicine school
2. Board certification in Internal or Family Medicine with 5+ years clinical and graduated leadership experience.
3. Duly licensed to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In good standing with the Medical Board of Virginia.
