Sensor Operator Aircraft information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sensor Operator Aircraft, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sensor Operator Aircraft, you need a solid understanding of aerial surveillance, navigation, and data analysis, often supported by military training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with advanced sensor systems, radar, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) equipment, and mission management software is typically required. Attention to detail, quick decision-making, and effective communication are critical soft skills in this high-stakes environment. These skills ensure accurate data collection, effective mission execution, and the safety of both the crew and the aircraft.

What are some common challenges faced by Sensor Operator Aircraft professionals during missions and how can they be addressed?

Sensor Operator Aircraft professionals often face challenges such as rapidly changing mission parameters, managing multiple sensor systems simultaneously, and maintaining clear communication with pilots and mission commanders. Adapting quickly to new information and prioritizing tasks under pressure are essential skills. Regular training, thorough pre-mission briefings, and leveraging standardized operating procedures help operators stay prepared and responsive during dynamic flight operations.

What are Sensor Operator Aircraft?

Sensor Operator Aircraft are professionals who operate and monitor sophisticated sensors and imaging equipment on aircraft, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or manned surveillance planes. Their primary role is to collect, analyze, and interpret data from the sensors to support missions like reconnaissance, surveillance, search and rescue, or environmental monitoring. They work closely with pilots and mission commanders to ensure accurate data collection and timely reporting. This job requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations.

What is the difference between Sensor Operator Aircraft vs Sensor Operator UAV?

AspectSensor Operator AircraftSensor Operator UAV
CredentialsFAA pilot certifications, sensor operation trainingUAV pilot licenses, sensor operation certifications
Work EnvironmentMilitary, government, or commercial aircraftUnmanned aerial vehicles, remote operation
Industry UsageAerospace, defense, surveillanceMapping, reconnaissance, environmental monitoring

Sensor Operator Aircraft and Sensor Operator UAV both involve operating sensors for surveillance and data collection. The main difference lies in their platforms: one works with manned aircraft, requiring pilot certifications and working in crewed environments, while the other operates unmanned drones, focusing on remote control and UAV-specific certifications. Both roles are vital in defense, surveillance, and data gathering industries, but they differ in training, environment, and operational procedures.

The Sensor Fusion Software Engineer will support advanced sensor fusion, perception, autonomy, and embedded software development for fighter and unmanned platforms. This role focuses on developing flight-ready sensor fusion algorithms, building embedded C++ software for real-time operating systems, staging algorithms in high-fidelity simulations, and helping shape next-generation multi-platform fusion capabilities.

Required Skills
  • 5+ years of experience in sensor fusion sub-domains such as state estimation, identification, correlation, or sensor tasking; or strong experience across signal processing, artificial intelligence, autonomy/perception, navigation, or control systems in a sensor or systems application.
  • 5+ years of experience with algorithms used in development of sensor modes for RF and/or IR-based sensor systems.
  • 5+ years of experience with Visual Studio development.
  • 10+ years of experience with real-time operating systems development using C, C++, or Rust.
  • Windows and/or Linux development experience.
  • High-fidelity prototyping or simulation experience using MATLAB or Python.
  • Demonstrated success working in an Agile environment.
  • Strong embedded C++ software development experience.
  • Ability to develop operational, flight-ready sensor fusion software.
  • Ability to contribute to software requirements, algorithm design, mode development, design reviews, and testing.
  • Ability to work across fusion sub-disciplines to integrate algorithms into broader sensor fusion systems.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with fighter aircraft, unmanned platforms, or advanced aerospace systems.
  • Experience with reusable multi-platform fusion engines.
  • Experience with autonomous decision-making software.
  • Experience with RF sensors, IR sensors, perception algorithms, embedded software, real-time systems, operational analysis, and simulation-based feasibility studies.
  • Experience serving as a subject matter expert in a sensor fusion, autonomy, perception, or algorithm development domain.
What You'll Do
  • Develop embedded C++ sensor fusion software products deployed across multiple platforms.
  • Support software running on real-time operating systems.
  • Develop and refine algorithms that enable aircraft-based fusion and autonomous decision-making.
  • Support sensor fusion sub-domains such as state estimation, identification, correlation, and sensor tasking.
  • Stage algorithms in high-fidelity simulation environments for feasibility studies and operational analysis.
  • Develop the vision for integrating new technologies, sensors, and capabilities into advanced aircraft programs.
  • Represent the organization as a subject matter expert in assigned sensor fusion domains.
  • Coordinate with other fusion sub-disciplines to ensure algorithm integration across core fusion capabilities.
  • Define pathways for incorporation into a reusable, next-generation multi-platform Fusion Engine.
  • Support requirements development, algorithm design, design reviews, software testing, and flight-ready implementation.
Pay
  • $30.00โ€“$150.00/hour
