Job description

The Senior Director, Science, Innovation, & Development is responsible for leading and managing the scientific and research operations at AccuWeather. The successful candidate will serve as the senior advisor on innovation and oversee the development of new products and solutions in the Artificial Intelligence, Meteorology, and Scientific Disciplines. One of the initial responsibilities of this position will be leading the definition and development of AccuWeather's Next Generation Weather Forecasting System along with the creation of new innovative and industry leading solutions in health, energy, sports and transportation. The person will also be responsible for creation of new intellectual capabilities and patents, and capitalizing on existing intellectual capital and patents. This position will report to the SVP, Digital Strategy, with a great amount of collaboration across the Executive Leadership Team, particularly with the IT organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create, grow, and lead teams responsible for innovation
  • Develop AccuWeather's next generation weather forecasting technology and systems
  • Drive corporate innovation in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing
  • Create new data products to be used across our entire media and business services product portfolio
  • Evaluate, prioritize and develop an ongoing pipeline of new ideas from various parts of the company
  • Define and create early proof of concepts in collaboration with Product Office
  • Clearly define budgets, resourcing needs, and project timelines
  • Lead collaborations with academic research partners and other companies, as needed
  • Recommend acquisitions when appropriate
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS or PhD in Computer Science, Meteorology, Statistics or equivalent degree in Science, Technology, or related field required
  • 10 years' experience in similar leadership position
  • Experience in Artificial Intelligence, specifically with Deep Learning and Neural Networks
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Prior experience in leading teams of 5-10 individuals
  • Knowledge of meteorological data highly desired
  • Strong organization skills
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment under changing and strict deadlines
  • Ability to read and interpret complex documents
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees and/or client, prospective clients, and community organizations
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, multitask, and balance work in the face of rapidly changing needs
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
