Senior Visual Development Artist information

What is a senior visual development artist?

A Senior Visual Development Artist is a creative professional who helps define the visual style, mood, and look of animated films, video games, or other media projects. They create concept art, color scripts, environments, characters, and props that guide the production team in achieving a cohesive visual direction. Senior artists in this role are also responsible for mentoring junior artists, collaborating with directors and other departments, and ensuring that the visual storytelling aligns with the project's vision. Their work is critical in establishing a project’s unique identity and atmosphere.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior visual development artist?

To thrive as a Senior Visual Development Artist, you need advanced drawing and painting skills, a strong understanding of color theory and composition, and a portfolio showcasing experience in concept art for animation or games. Mastery of digital painting tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter, and familiarity with 3D software like Blender or Maya is often expected. Strong communication, creative problem-solving, and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the effective translation of storytelling ideas into compelling visuals that drive the overall look and feel of a project.

How does a senior visual development artist typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

As a Senior Visual Development Artist, you will frequently collaborate with directors, art directors, character designers, and 3D modelers to ensure a unified visual style across the project. Your role often involves translating story concepts into detailed visuals that serve as references for other departments. Effective communication and the ability to receive and incorporate feedback are essential, as you’ll participate in regular reviews and brainstorming sessions to align creative direction. This collaborative environment allows you to contribute to the overall artistic vision while learning from cross-functional teams.

Job description

Your Opportunity
The Marketing Experience Design Team (MXD) helps marketing teams create consistent, high-quality digital experiences across web, email, and social channels.
As a Senior Visual Designer, you will shape how Schwab shows up across digital marketing touchpoints. This role blends UX strategy, visual design craft, interaction design, design systems, and emerging AI-enabled design processes. You will partner with marketing, content, product, technology, brand, and vendor teams to turn complex needs into polished, scalable digital experiences.
We are looking for a senior designer with strong visual design judgment who can lead independently, build trusted partnerships, and help teams make client-centered decisions without sacrificing brand quality, usability, or craft.
What You'll Do
- Lead UX and visual design direction for digital marketing experiences across web, email, and social.
- Translate marketing goals, client needs, content strategy, brand direction, AI opportunities, and technology considerations into clear design direction.
- Create visual patterns, templates, modules, page layouts, and reusable assets that help teams deliver faster and more consistently.
- Apply strong understanding of interaction patterns, layout, typography, color, imagery, accessibility, and responsive behavior.
- Provide art direction and visual design critique to strengthen message clarity, brand expression, and overall experience quality.
- Apply AI tools and workflows to support discovery, synthesis, ideation, content exploration, prototyping, and workflow acceleration.
- Partner with marketing, content, product, engineering, analytics, legal/compliance, vendor, and channel teams to align decisions and remove barriers.
- Help teams adopt practical guidance, tools, and ways of working that improve quality and efficiency.
About MXD
- Creates scalable design assets, templates, modules, and guidance that support consistent digital marketing execution.
- Partners across channels to support web, email, and social experiences.
- Supports a large digital footprint, including approximately 28 websites and high-volume email programs across the organization.
What you have
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of relevant experience in UX design, visual design, digital marketing experience, interaction design, product design, content strategy, or equivalent roles.
- Experience leading UX, UI, or visual design work across digital marketing channels, including web and email.
- Strong understanding of content strategy and structure, information architecture, and taxonomy.
- Strong visual design skills, including typography, layout, hierarchy, composition, color, imagery, responsive design, and brand expression across digital channels.
- Proficiency in Figma, reusable component libraries, visual specifications, and applied use of AI tools or AI-enabled workflows as part of the design process.
- Ability to communicate clearly, influence without direct authority, build alignment, and form strong cross-functional partnerships.
- Online portfolio demonstrating strong visual design craft, design thinking, problem-solving, and client-centered digital experience outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background creating templates, reusable components, or channel guidance that helps teams deliver at scale.
- Familiarity with modern content management systems and development platforms like Sanity and Vercel.
- Experience supporting client-facing experiences in regulated industries, financial services, complex enterprises, or large matrixed organizations.
- Ability to mentor designers and help teams adopt new tools and ways of working.
