Job description

Position Overview

A specialized engineering services firm is seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer III to provide senior-level design expertise and team leadership in support of energy infrastructure projects. This role blends advanced technical design work with mentorship, quality oversight, and process improvement responsibilities, making it ideal for a seasoned designer ready to take on greater ownership and influence within the design team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineers and other disciplines on the development of process and site design
  • Produce complex 3D designs and models for sites, facilities, pipelines, supports, foundations, and related energy infrastructure elements
  • Read, interpret, and apply engineering terminology and symbols accurately across project deliverables
  • Partner with the Drafting & Design Coordinator to develop and refine design and drafting standards, procedures, and best practices
  • Train, coach, and mentor Mechanical Designers, supporting their technical growth and development
  • Help coordinate external training opportunities for the design team as needed
  • Support project staffing decisions, ensuring each project is assigned to appropriately qualified personnel
  • Provide leadership and direction to design and drafting staff on assigned projects, with potential supervisory responsibility over other designers or drafters
  • Review the work of other designers and drafters for accuracy and adherence to company, client, and industry standards
  • Review deliverables and work in progress received from clients, consultants, or vendors
  • Stay current on emerging industry tools and technologies, recommending updates or upgrades as appropriate
  • Communicate and coordinate with clients on design requirements and standards under the direction of Project Managers or Lead Engineers
  • Support hiring efforts and contribute to performance reviews for design team members
  • Provide input on new project proposals and cost estimates
  • Review scope changes, extra work requests, and factors impacting design team staffing needs
  • Escalate project or personnel concerns to leadership as necessary
  • Prepare reports and documentation as requested by leadership or project management
  • Support engineering and project teams with product research, vendor communication, and related tasks
  • Travel to field locations as needed to take field measurements, sketches, and as-built documentation
  • Maintain up-to-date drawing logs and task tracking, providing regular status updates
  • Strive to complete all assigned work on time and within budget
  • Perform Designer II-level responsibilities as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Work Environment

This role is primarily office-based, with occasional travel to field project locations (expected to be less than 20%). Office work may involve extended periods at a workstation with computer use. Overtime and weekend work may occasionally be required. A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is necessary.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, climb stairs, and use hands for extended tasks
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 lbs. frequently and up to 25 lbs. occasionally
  • Requires close and distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust visual focus

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in a related field, or a certificate of completion from an accredited design/drafting program
  • 5+ years of experience developing complex 2D and 3D designs, with a demonstrated ability to drive design process improvements and innovative solutions
  • Expert-level proficiency in AutoCAD and the broader Autodesk product family for 3D modeling and drafting
  • Expert-level proficiency in the CADWorx product suite (Plant, P&ID, Spec Editor, and Isogen)
  • Expert knowledge of energy infrastructure design principles
  • Expert knowledge of plant layout, piping design, and support/hanger design
  • Expert knowledge of pipes, valves, fittings, and associated material and dimensional specifications
  • Strong decision-making skills with the ability to identify alternative solutions to complex problems
  • Ability to provide clear, concise direction to design staff
  • Strong communication skills suited to a dynamic team environment, including coordination with external contacts
  • Ability to establish and maintain design standards, processes, and systems across a team
  • Comfortable participating in and leading meetings with senior management

Preferred:

  • Experience with additional 3D modeling software such as Revit
