Is Excel VBA still in demand?

Senior VBA developers with expertise in Excel automation remain in demand for roles involving data analysis, reporting, and process optimization. Proficiency in VBA, along with knowledge of Excel and other Office tools, is valuable for organizations seeking to improve efficiency through automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior VBA Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior VBA Developer, you need advanced programming skills in VBA, strong knowledge of Excel and Access, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, SQL databases, and experience with version control systems like Git are commonly required. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies enable efficient automation, robust solution development, and successful collaboration with business stakeholders.

What is the difference between Senior Vba Developer vs Data Analyst?

AspectSenior Vba DeveloperData Analyst
Required SkillsVBA, Excel, programming, automationData analysis, Excel, SQL, visualization
Work EnvironmentFinance, insurance, corporate reportingBusiness intelligence, marketing, finance
CertificationsExcel VBA certifications, programming coursesData analysis certifications (e.g., CAP, Microsoft Certified Data Analyst)

While both roles work extensively with Excel and data, a Senior Vba Developer primarily focuses on automating processes using VBA, whereas a Data Analyst interprets data to provide insights. The roles often overlap in industries like finance and corporate reporting, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and skill set.

Is VBA still used in 2026?

VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) remains in use for automation and customization within Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Access, even in 2026. Senior VBA developers are still sought after for maintaining legacy systems and developing new automation solutions, though many organizations are gradually transitioning to modern programming languages and tools. Knowledge of VBA alongside other scripting skills can be valuable for job roles requiring legacy system support.

Can ChatGPT write VBA code?

As a Senior VBA Developer, you can use ChatGPT to generate VBA code snippets, troubleshoot issues, and learn new programming techniques. However, ChatGPT's code suggestions should be reviewed and tested thoroughly to ensure accuracy and security before implementation. It can be a helpful tool to assist in coding tasks but does not replace the need for expert knowledge and debugging skills.

What are some typical challenges faced by Senior VBA Developers when working on legacy codebases?

Senior VBA Developers often encounter legacy code that lacks proper documentation, making it difficult to understand the original logic or identify dependencies. Additionally, they may need to refactor or optimize outdated code to improve performance and compatibility with newer systems, all while ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing business processes. Collaboration with end-users and business analysts is crucial to clarify requirements and validate changes, which can present its own communication challenges. Adapting to evolving organizational needs and maintaining code quality under tight deadlines are also common aspects of the role.

What are Senior VBA Developers?

Senior VBA Developers are experienced professionals who specialize in creating, maintaining, and optimizing applications using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), primarily within Microsoft Office products like Excel and Access. They design complex automation solutions, develop macros to streamline business processes, and ensure data integrity and efficiency. In addition to advanced coding skills, they often lead projects, mentor junior developers, and collaborate with stakeholders to understand business needs and implement effective solutions.

How much do VBA developers make?

VBA developers typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior VBA developers with advanced skills in automation and complex Excel modeling can earn higher salaries, especially in finance, consulting, or large corporations.

  • Set and review code and standard approaches — ASCE 7, IBC, NESC, ASCE 113, IEEE 693, and NFPA — for project teams.
  • Ensure adherence to applicable Client, EPC, Owner, and Utility standards across project deliverables.
  • Lead coordination of specifications and contract requirements with project managers and client representatives from early design through construction, resolving constructability with construction teams.
  • Coordinate project design teams and guide the technical direction of projects, making key design decisions and resolving complex technical issues.
  • Coordinate with designers and the civil design team on drawings, details, and foundation bills of material (BOMs) across large project areas.
  • Use engineering software (Excel, RISA, LPILE, and Trimble products; VBA and Python for design automation) to deliver and document designs.
  • Mentor engineers and designers, set quality expectations, and review work across projects.
  • Support business development, proposals, and client relationships as a senior technical lead.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
  • A bachelor’s degree in structural or civil engineering from an ABET-accredited program; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • 8+ years of structural engineering experience. Professional Engineer (PE) required; SE a plus.
  • Expert command of structural analysis and design and the applicable codes and standards.
  • Experience guiding technical direction and coordinating project design teams, clients, and construction partners.
  • Proficiency with structural and foundation software (RISA, LPILE), Trimble products, Excel, and design automation (VBA/Python).
  • Strong leadership and the ability to guide technical direction across projects.
