Job Description

Wonderful College Prep Academy is accepting applications for a part-time tutor position in the GEAR UP program at Sanger West High School. The GEAR UP ELA & Math Tutor will be assigned to the senior class at Sanger West High School. Assignments will be during lunch periods, and/or during class times (mornings and/or afternoons). Workdays will align with the Sanger Unified School District and Wonderful College Prep Academy calendars. This position will report to the GEAR UP Manager at Sanger West High School and is an in-person position. The GEAR UP Tutor (ELA & Math) position is a one-year contract from August 10, 2026, to June 4, 2027.

The GEAR UP Tutor’s responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Provide both Math and ELA tutoring services to students 1:1 or in small groups in classrooms.
  • Collaborate with and provide support for GEAR UP staff, such as supporting field trips, family workshops, and contacting families. 
  • Assist seniors with review of scholarship essays and college essays. 
  • Work directly with students to provide various academic support services (i.e., tutoring; assisting with completing forms; assisting with workshops).
  • Assist in the planning, organizing, and implementing GEAR UP grant activities.
  • Follow school and GEAR UP protocols and procedures.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

ABOUT THE GEAR UP GRANT: GEAR UP is a federally funded Title III Grant. Wonderful College Prep Academy, in partnership with Avenal and Sanger Unified School Districts, will work with 6th and 7th-grade students from four middle schools to prepare them for college. The Federal Department of Education website for GEAR UP is http://www2.ed.gov/programs/gearup/index.html.

This discretionary grant program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP provides seven-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school and their first year of college.

Qualifications
  • College graduate or be enrolled in college and have completed freshman English and college math (Algebra II).
  • At least one year of tutoring experience.
  • An eager, flexible learner and problem solver who feels comfortable taking initiative.
  • A self-starter with an exceptional work ethic and the ability to work well away from colleagues and management.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • An ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with scholars.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus

Pay: $18.00/Hour.

Work Schedule: 

  • Monday: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Tuesday: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Wednesday: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Thursday: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Total: 28 hours per week.
