What does a senior transmission line engineer do?

A Senior Transmission Line Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of high-voltage transmission lines that carry electricity over long distances. They ensure that these structures meet safety, reliability, and regulatory standards, often collaborating with other engineers, utility companies, and regulatory bodies. Their work involves using specialized software to model line routes, selecting appropriate materials, and assessing environmental impacts. In addition to technical duties, they may manage project timelines, budgets, and mentor junior engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior transmission line engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Transmission Line Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical or civil engineering, experience in transmission line design, and typically a PE license. Proficiency with industry-standard design software such as PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, and GIS systems, along with knowledge of relevant codes and standards, is crucial. Excellent project management, leadership, and communication skills help you coordinate multidisciplinary teams and client interactions. These skills are essential to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant transmission line projects from concept to completion.

What are some typical challenges faced by senior transmission line engineers in managing large-scale projects?

Senior Transmission Line Engineers often encounter challenges like coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, managing strict project timelines, and ensuring compliance with evolving safety and environmental regulations. They must balance technical design work with project management duties, such as budget oversight and stakeholder communication. Additionally, adapting designs to accommodate right-of-way constraints and unforeseen site conditions requires strong problem-solving skills and adaptability.

Job description

Hunt Utility Services is a privately held company providing management and support services for Sharyland Utilities, L.L.C., a Texas-based electric transmission utility. We are committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient transmission and substation services, ensuring operational excellence, and investing to support the infrastructure needs of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas grid.
Position Summary
Join our team as a Senior Transmission Line Engineer, where you will serve as the technical lead for transmission line projects, supporting execution of high-voltage infrastructure (138 kV & 345 kV).
In this role, you will define project scope, lead routing and siting efforts, and provide engineering leadership to ensure projects are technically sound and executable. You will coordinate closely with the Engineer of Record (EOR), construction teams, and internal stakeholders to guide projects from concept through construction and commissioning.
While you will not manage overall project cost and schedule, you will provide critical technical inputs and assumptions that support development of project estimates and timelines. You will work closely with the Senior Project Manager, ensuring alignment between scope, engineering, and field execution.
Responsibilities
  • Define and develop project scope including routing, alignment, structures, and ROW assumptions
  • Lead routing, siting, and permitting coordination and evaluation of alternatives
  • Provide technical input for cost estimates and schedules
  • Coordinate with EOR to guide design and ensure alignment with scope and standards
  • Review engineering deliverables for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with standards
  • Support development of structure design, line configurations, and foundation considerations
  • Align engineering deliverables with project schedule and communicate scope changes
  • Support construction through RFIs, issue resolution, and field coordination
  • Maintain visibility into engineering progress, risks, and constructability
  • Lead standards development and continuous improvement
  • Support WBS alignment, PR inputs, and vendor coordination
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including PCM, Construction, and Environmental

Required Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 7+ years of experience in transmission line engineering or project execution within electric utilities or EPC firms
  • Demonstrated experience supporting design reviews, value engineering, and constructability assessments
  • Experience supporting development of project scope, schedule, and cost inputs for small- to mid-scale transmission projects, or serving as a project lead engineer
  • Familiarity with industry tools such as PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and applicable codes (e.g., NESC, ASCE, IEEE)
  • Experience coordinating and managing external consultants, including Engineer of Record (EOR) and owner's engineering teams
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to support multiple projects and workstreams simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with a high level of ownership, accountability, and initiative
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, cross-functional environment, collaborating across engineering, construction, and support teams
  • Experience working within utility environments, including coordination with environmental, permitting, operations, and stakeholder groups

Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Familiarity with transmission line siting and regulatory processes
  • Experience supporting right-of-way (ROW) acquisition, including coordination with landowners and stakeholders
  • Experience working within ERCOT or similar utility markets
  • Experience identifying and implementing cost and schedule optimization opportunities during design and execution
  • Familiarity with vendor engagement and equipment procurement processes, including technical bid evaluations
  • Exposure to digital project delivery tools (ProjectWise, or similar platforms)

Company Highlights
  • For 90 years, we have nurtured creative ideas and turned them into successful realities using three core strategic pillars - creativity, excellence, and people.
  • 401K - 12% employer contribution with no vesting period (6% Match and 6% non-matching contribution)
  • Highly competitive compensation
  • Hybrid work options available for most roles
  • Five to eight weeks of PTO annually based on years of experience; eleven additional holidays per calendar year
  • All Medical/Dental/Vision benefits start day one with the company; low employee premiums
