Senior Test Engineering Manager information

What does a senior test engineering manager do?

A Senior Test Engineering Manager leads teams responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing testing processes to ensure the quality and reliability of software or hardware products. Their responsibilities include developing test strategies, managing test engineers, collaborating with other department leads, and ensuring that products meet industry standards and customer requirements. They also analyze test results, drive process improvements, and help resolve complex technical issues. This role typically requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and experience in quality assurance methodologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior test engineering manager?

To thrive as a Senior Test Engineering Manager, you need extensive experience in software or hardware testing, a solid engineering background, and a track record of leading test teams, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with automated testing frameworks, CI/CD tools, and quality management systems, as well as certifications like ISTQB or Six Sigma, is highly valued. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and excellent communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies enable the effective delivery of high-quality products, drive process improvement, and ensure alignment between engineering and business goals.

What are the main challenges a senior test engineering manager typically faces when leading a diverse QA team?

A Senior Test Engineering Manager often navigates challenges such as aligning testing strategies across multiple projects, managing cross-functional teams with varying skill sets, and ensuring timely delivery of high-quality products. Balancing resource allocation, keeping up with evolving testing technologies, and fostering effective communication between development, QA, and product management are also key hurdles. Successful managers proactively address these by implementing clear processes, promoting continuous learning, and encouraging collaboration within and across teams.

Department

Location: Austin, TX
Employment Type: Full-time, In-Office
Department: Engineering
Salary: Top of market salary + equity

We're hiring a Senior Software Engineering Manager to lead and scale our engineering organization.

As a (former) individual contributor, you developed innovative products and made hard decisions to solve ambiguous technical problems. You are now scaling your impact by enabling the team to achieve the same level of technical excellence you’re known for. You'll report directly to our VP of Engineering and work closely with existing engineering leads to create that future.

This is a 4 day, in-office position based in Austin, TX. We are located near Mopac and W. Anderson Lane.

Our engineering team leans senior, with most members having over 10 years of experience at high-growth companies in Austin. As a Senior Engineering Manager, you could:

Partner with product to design self-serve customer experiences, defining the technical direction and leading your team to deliver measurable outcomes.

Evaluate cutting-edge vendors for detailed property analytics, collaborating with data science to identify early indicators of property conditions and risks.

Guide and coach experienced engineers, helping them identify their strengths and charting paths for continued growth and impact.

What You'll Bring

Experienced: This isn't your first rodeo leading high-performing engineering teams. While there's no specific minimum number of years, we expect you to confidently navigate complex technical landscapes, mentor senior engineers, and scale teams.

Builder: You're passionate about shaping the product through engineering leadership. You'll drive architectural vision, empower your team to build innovative solutions, and foster an environment where engineers contribute thoughtfully to the user experience, rather than just executing pre-defined specs.

Pragmatic: You prioritize impact and swift delivery. You'll balance team velocity with technical excellence, making thoughtful trade-offs to solve problems effectively. You know when to leverage off-the-shelf solutions and when a custom approach is essential, and you're ready to guide your team in iteratively building and deploying solutions that move the needle.

Specific Languages: We don't really care if you've worked in our stack before as long as you're happy to learn it. If you're sharp enough to be on this team, you're sharp enough to learn any language or framework quickly.

How You'll Contribute

Build and Grow Teams: Actively participate in the hiring, onboarding, and retention of exceptional engineering talent.

Mentorship & Development: Coach, mentor, and foster the career growth of individual engineers through regular one-on-one meetings, constructive feedback, and performance development plans.

Team Health & Culture: Cultivate a collaborative team environment where engineers feel empowered to take ownership and contribute their best work.

Feedback Culture: Champion a culture of open and direct feedback, both positive and constructive, to drive continuous improvement and trust within the team.

Technical Leadership & Excellence

Architectural Guidance: Guide architectural decisions and drive system-level thinking to ensure the scalability, resilience, and maintainability of our software systems.

Technical Vision: Define and champion the technical vision and strategy for your domain, ensuring alignment with overall company goals.

Code Quality & Standards: Instill a spirit of continuous improvement in code quality, engineering best practices, and operational excellence.

Technical Debt Management: Manage technical debt, balancing long‑term technical vision with short-term deliverables.

Project & Delivery Oversight

Roadmap & Strategy: Partner with product, engineering, and cross‑functional teams to define roadmaps, set the direction, and drive customer and business impact for your team's products and features.

Execution & Delivery: Oversee the prioritization, planning, execution, and delivery of engineering projects and features with an emphasis on small iterations.

Operational Excellence: Ensure operational excellence, including support, on‑call rotations, deployments, and incident management, embracing a "you build it, you run it" philosophy.

Data analysis: Use data to drive decision making for evaluating features and success, prioritization, and identifying future opportunities.

Cross-functional Collaboration

Stakeholder Partnership: Collaborate extensively with Product Managers, Insurance Product, Sales, Marketing, Data Science, and other engineering teams to align priorities, ensure visibility of product and engineering initiatives, and incorporate the company’s priorities.

Strategic Alignment: Work with senior leadership to understand the overall business direction, company metrics, provide technical insights, and contribute to strategic decision‑making.

Our Technical Stack and Tools:

Python 3 / Kotlin

Typescript

React (Next.js)

Kafka (we build on an event driven architecture)

AWS (EKS)

Github Actions with a full CI/CD Pipeline
