What is a senior test engineer?

Senior Test Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing testing processes to ensure the quality and reliability of software products or systems. They develop test plans, create automated and manual test cases, and collaborate with developers and other stakeholders to identify and resolve issues. Their role often includes mentoring junior team members, improving testing strategies, and ensuring that products meet industry standards and customer requirements.

How does a senior test engineer typically collaborate with development and product teams during the software release cycle?

As a Senior Test Engineer, you will work closely with software developers and product managers throughout the software release cycle. You'll participate in design and requirement reviews to identify potential quality issues early, help define testing strategies, and provide feedback on testability. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as you'll often coordinate test plans, report on defects, and ensure that issues are resolved before release. This cross-functional teamwork not only helps deliver high-quality software but also broadens your understanding of the product and enhances your problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Test Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of software testing methodologies, test automation, and quality assurance principles, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise with automation tools such as Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, and familiarity with CI/CD systems like Jenkins are often required, as well as certifications like ISTQB. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring software reliability, optimizing testing processes, and collaborating effectively with development teams.

What is the difference between Senior Test Engineer vs QA Analyst?

AspectSenior Test EngineerQA Analyst
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; experience in testing; certifications like ISTQBBachelor's in IT, Computer Science, or related; testing experience; ISTQB certification often preferred
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams; involved in test planning, automation, and executionQuality assurance teams; focuses on manual testing, documentation, and process improvement
Industry UsageUsed across software, tech, and IT industries for testing rolesCommon in software development, IT, and tech sectors for quality assurance

While both roles focus on software quality, Senior Test Engineers typically handle more complex testing tasks, automation, and test strategy, whereas QA Analysts often focus on manual testing, documentation, and process adherence. The Senior Test Engineer role usually requires more technical expertise and experience in automation tools.

How much does a senior test engineer earn?

Dover Motion, Inc, a brand under Hengstler Dynapar, is seeking a Senior Test Engineer who will own and drive the test strategy and architecture for complex precision motion and electromechanical systems across the entire product lifecycle.

This role goes beyond execution and requires deep technical leadership, system‑level thinking, and cross‑functional influence. You will define how products are validated, ensure scalability of test solutions, and drive design improvements through data‑driven insights.

As a senior member of the Dover Motion engineering team, you will act as the subject matter expert in test engineering, influencing product design, mentoring team members, and advancing test methodologies to support innovation, quality, and operational excellence.

Responsibilities
  • Define, own, and drive the end‑to‑end test strategy across product development, validation, and production phases.
  • Design and develop scalable automated test solutions, including hardware fixtures and software frameworks, for both development and manufacturing environments.
  • Establish and maintain system‑level test architectures, protocols, and validation methodologies for complex motion control systems.
  • Analyze, interpret, and communicate test results, providing data‑driven insights to influence product design and technical decisions.
  • Lead cross‑functional failure analysis and root‑cause investigations, driving resolution across electrical, mechanical, and software domains.
  • Collaborate with design engineering to implement design‑for‑testability and improve product robustness and test efficiency.
  • Identify technical risks early and develop mitigation strategies through structured testing and rapid prototyping.
  • Drive continuous improvement of test processes, focusing on test coverage, cycle time, cost, and product quality.
  • Develop and implement advanced test data acquisition, analytics, and digitalization approaches to enhance decision‑making.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to test engineers and technicians, supporting skill development and best practices.
  • Act as a subject‑matter expert for test engineering, influencing cross‑functional stakeholders including R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, and Program Management.
  • Support production test systems and operations to ensure quality, throughput, and reliability targets are consistently met.
Key Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in test engineering or system validation for complex electromechanical systems
  • Proven track record of:
    • Owning and delivering test strategies for new product development (NPI)
    • Developing automated test systems (software + hardware)
    • Leading cross‑functional technical initiatives
Experiences that Strengthen Your Candidacy
  • Theoretical and practical understanding of basic analog and digital servo control theory
  • Advanced troubleshooting across electrical, mechanical, and system‑level domains
  • Experience with Motion Controls, Drives, Motors, Encoders, and Power Supplies
  • Measurement and testing of precision positioning systems
  • Working knowledge in programming with languages such as C, C++ and/or C#
  • Strong expertise in test system architecture and automation
  • Proficiency with LabVIEW or equivalent test automation tools
  • Programming experience in C, C++, C#, Python, or similar
  • Hands‑on experience with measurement tools (oscilloscopes, DAQs, sensors, metrology systems)
Pay Range
