Job description

Job Overview

This position offers engagement with leading-edge heavy industrial and electric utilities companies through the exercise and sharpening of project engineering skills on custom power system protection and control systems.  All phases of project work are encountered: inspection, design, engineering, validation and commissioning. Industry Standards involvement, creating/delivering customer presentations, customer communications and proposal preparation are integral.

A Day In The Life

Design/Engineering
Read and analyze customer specifications and drawing and incorporate requirements into design activities.  Document and bring to attention of management areas which company cannot comply and must take exception.
Design customized protection & control systems in accordance with established industry standards, guidelines and best practices.
Use computer assisted engineering, design software and equipment to perform design tasks.
Develop drawings and BOM required for the manufacture and testing of customized systems.
Remain up to date on established power system protection and control industry standards, guidelines and best practices applicable to heavy industrials and electric utilities, domestic and international.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, define system architecture, and develop software solutions.
Troubleshoot and debug software issues, ensuring system reliability and uptime.
Commissioning, Test and Service
Develop procedures and instructions required by the company and customer for testing and validation of customized systems, and Beckwith installed products to verify functionality and operations.
Assist customers with field testing, validation and commissioning providing home office and field-site service.
Lead or assist with customer field and/or classroom training of company products and systems.
Assist customers with resolution of field problems providing trouble shooting services.
Project Involvement
Lead or assist in design, engineering, validation and problem resolution on a timely and orderly basis.
Develop and adhere to approved project schedule providing management and/or customer with appropriate status and review reports.  Conducting design review meeting(s) may be required.
Develop and maintain working relationships with vendors to keep abreast of buyout product offerings, obtain favorable technical support and required services.
Develop application manuals, instruction books, installation, testing procedures/methods and other required documentation.
Plans and formulates engineering program as well as organizes project staff to meet project requirements.
Assigns project personnel to specific phases or aspects of a project such as technical studies, system design, preparation of specifications, technical plans, and system validation.
Controls expenditures within limitations of project budget.
Prepares interim and completion project reports.
Additional Responsibilities
Assist in the development and preparation of comprehensive technical proposals in response to customer requirements and solicitations.  Includes preliminary design, detailed costing and description of company offering.
Coordinates activities related to technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and validation/commissioning problems.
Directs integration of Engineering/Design and System Fabrication activities.
Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
As required, assist, Business Development and Sales with customer visits and presentations, participation at industry trade shows and conferences, and training of company personnel and sales representatives.
Understand and comply with ISO 9001 procedures.
As required, travel domestically and internationally in fulfillment of duties and responsibilities.
Comply with all work rules, including but not limited to, the Company's safety and attendance policies.

What will help you thrive in this role?

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering plus seven years related experience and/or training. Background in power system protection (protective relaying) and control for power generation, transmission and distribution applications required.  Ability to read and understand schematics and drawings.

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS

Laptop/PC computer, Smartphone, Printer, FAX, Copier, Secondary Injection Test Set, Oscilloscope, AutoCAD, Plotter, Calculator

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

  • Familiarity with equipment, operations and services in the electric power protection and control arena.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as OPC, Modbus, DNP3, IEC-61850 and BACnet is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Professional
  • AutoCAD, MS Project, Visio, and Outlook
  • Excellent telephone customer service skills and etiquette
