What does a senior structural engineer do?

A Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe, stable, and comply with relevant codes. They lead project teams, review calculations and drawings, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers. Additionally, they collaborate with architects, contractors, and clients to deliver projects on time and within budget, while also addressing any structural issues that may arise during construction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior structural engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Structural Engineer, you need an accredited engineering degree, professional licensure (such as PE or Chartered Engineer), and deep expertise in structural analysis and design. We are more than 36,000 people, in over 70 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world's most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Role Description:

Ready to put your structural expertise to work on projects that truly matter? Arcadis is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to join our Resilience Water team in Ohio, with a preference for Columbus. This is more than just a role; it's an opportunity to help shape resilient water infrastructure across the Midwest as communities respond to climate change, rapid urban growth, and growing sustainability demands.

At Arcadis, our mission is clear: to protect vital water resources, strengthen natural ecosystems, and build communities designed to endure. Join us and be part of a purpose-driven team delivering innovative solutions that make a real difference-today and for generations to come.

Role Accountabilities:

As a Structural Engineer on our Resilience Water team, you'll be at the forefront of designing the next generation of sustainable infrastructure. From upgrading water and wastewater treatment facilities to developing shoreline protection systems and resilient stormwater and distribution networks, your work will directly contribute to building stronger, more adaptive communities.

What You'll Do:
  • Lead structural design efforts for a diverse range of water infrastructure projects, customizing solutions to meet site-specific conditions, regulatory standards, and project goals.
  • Conduct detailed structural assessments and engineering analyses to inform innovative, data-driven design strategies.
  • Prepare high-quality technical deliverables, including engineering calculations, construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, bringing creativity and technical expertise to deliver sustainable design solutions aligned with industry codes and client expectations.
  • Support project execution by monitoring scope, schedule, and budget to ensure successful, on-time delivery.
  • Travel up to 25% to conduct site visits, participate in design meetings, and oversee construction activities, applying your expertise in real-world environments.

This is your chance to join a mission-driven team redefining resilience in water infrastructure and help shape a future where communities thrive despite evolving challenges.

Key Skills & Experience:

To succeed in this role, you should have strong proficiency in structural design software, particularly STAAD Pro, along with practical experience using AutoCAD and Revit. A solid understanding of relevant codes and standards, such as the International Building Code (IBC) and American Concrete Institute (ACI) guidelines, is essential. You will be expected to demonstrate the ability to prepare and review a wide range of engineering documentation, including technical drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and project schedules. Strong written and verbal communication skills are critical, especially for technical writing and effective collaboration. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a team-oriented environment and is passionate about sustainability and delivering innovative design solutions.

Qualifications & Experience:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field
  • 8 years of structural engineering design experience, preferably supporting water/wastewater infrastructure projects

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline
  • EIT certification or PE license strongly preferred
