Senior Structural Bim Modeler information

What is a senior structural BIM modeler?

Senior Structural BIM Modelers are experienced professionals who use Building Information Modeling (BIM) software to create, manage, and coordinate detailed digital representations of structural systems in construction projects. They work closely with engineers, architects, and other team members to ensure the accuracy and constructability of designs. Their responsibilities often include leading modeling teams, checking compliance with project standards, and resolving complex design issues. Senior Structural BIM Modelers play a key role in improving collaboration, reducing errors, and optimizing workflows in the design and construction process.

What is the difference between Senior Structural Bim Modeler vs Structural Draftsman?

AspectSenior Structural Bim ModelerStructural Draftsman
CredentialsBIM certifications, engineering or architecture degreeDrafting diploma or technical certificate
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, engineering consultancies, construction projectsArchitectural or engineering firms, construction sites
ResponsibilitiesCreating detailed 3D models, coordinating with engineers, ensuring BIM standardsPreparing 2D drawings, updating plans, basic modeling

The Senior Structural Bim Modeler focuses on advanced 3D modeling, BIM coordination, and project management, often requiring specialized certifications. In contrast, a Structural Draftsman primarily produces 2D drawings and technical sketches. While both roles support structural design, the Senior Bim Modeler plays a more strategic and technical role in BIM processes, making it essential for complex projects and integrated workflows.

How does a senior structural BIM modeler typically collaborate with engineers and other project stakeholders during a project lifecycle?

A Senior Structural BIM Modeler works closely with structural engineers, architects, and other modeling professionals to develop accurate and coordinated 3D models. They often participate in interdisciplinary coordination meetings, resolve clashes, and ensure that design intent is clearly documented. Regular communication and model sharing are essential to keep all parties updated on design changes and to facilitate smooth project delivery. This collaborative environment fosters problem-solving and enhances the overall efficiency of the design process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior structural BIM modeler?

To thrive as a Senior Structural BIM Modeler, you need deep knowledge of structural engineering principles, proficiency in BIM processes, and experience with construction documentation, typically supported by a degree in civil or structural engineering. Mastery of BIM software such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD, along with familiarity with industry standards and project collaboration platforms, is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualities are critical for delivering accurate, coordinated models that drive efficient project workflows and minimize construction errors.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced BIM Modeler / Electrical Detailer to support commercial electrical construction projects from preconstruction through completion. This role is responsible for developing accurate 3D BIM models, coordination drawings, and installation details that improve constructability, prefabrication, and field execution.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience modeling commercial electrical systems and is proficient in Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks. You will work closely with project managers, field teams, engineers, and other trades to identify conflicts, coordinate electrical installations, and produce accurate construction-ready drawings.

Responsibilities
  • Create, update, and maintain detailed BIM models for commercial electrical construction projects.
  • Develop electrical shop drawings, installation drawings, layout plans, and prefabrication drawings from contract documents.
  • Model conduit routing, equipment layouts, sleeves, hangers, supports, and other electrical systems and components.
  • Perform clash detection and coordinate with mechanical, plumbing, structural, and other trades to resolve conflicts before installation.
  • Review electrical drawings, specifications, and construction documents for accuracy and constructability.
  • Participate in BIM/VDC coordination meetings and incorporate approved design changes, RFIs, and field revisions into project models.
  • Collaborate with project managers, field supervisors, engineers, architects, and VDC teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Produce accurate drawings and model information to support field installation and prefabrication efforts.
  • Maintain project models throughout construction and assist with final as-built documentation.
  • Ensure models and drawings meet project requirements, company BIM standards, and quality expectations.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a BIM Modeler, Electrical Detailer, VDC Designer, or similar role.
  • Commercial electrical construction experience required.
  • Proven experience modeling electrical systems for commercial construction projects.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks.
  • Strong understanding of commercial electrical systems, conduit routing, equipment layouts, and installation practices.
  • Experience with BIM coordination, clash detection, and multidisciplinary trade coordination.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate, field-ready drawings.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Associate degree, technical training, or equivalent experience in BIM, drafting, electrical design, or a related field preferred.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation based on experience.
  • Paid time off and company-paid holidays.
  • Opportunities for career growth and professional development.
  • Supportive and collaborative team environment.
  • Consistent pipeline of commercial electrical construction projects.
  • Opportunity to work on complex projects utilizing advanced BIM and VDC technology.
