The senior software engineer title is sometimes used interchangeably with senior developer, and positions for both may share similar job duties and responsibilities. In general, software engineers are distinguished from developers in that software engineers apply engineering principles to software development.

Job description

The Senior Software Engineer I is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining internet applications and related systems. The Senior Software Engineer I collaborates within a team, following industry best practices, standards, and patterns to create innovative, high-quality solutions that meet our clients’ business needs and objectives.  The Senior Software Engineer I understands the business value behind the product and must be talented in problem-solving and making well-reasoned decisions about software design and implementation based on knowledge and a broad range of experiences with different roles, technologies, and situations.

As a Senior Software Engineer I, you are expected to understand the business rules behind a filing type and own assigned features end to end — requirements, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support. Cross-cutting and architectural changes are made in collaboration with, and subject to review by, a Senior Software Engineer II or team lead.

About the Work

Our product serves Secretary of State offices – state government agencies responsible for business filings and other public records - which means real filing deadlines, statutory requirements and citizens who rely on a working system.  All new development happens on our modern .NET platform.  We also maintain established .NET Framework (legacy) implementations currently in production or being migrated onto the modern platform; depending on your assignment, you may work in one or both.

This is a mature, multi-tenant  product rather than a blank page.  You’ll build new modules and capabilities on a well-established modern stack, typically supporting more than one client implementation concurrently – each with its own database, release calendar, and statutes.  That means real ownership: knowing the product and the client well, understanding business rules, questioning requirements that do not hold up, writing acceptance criteria and testing instructions for your own work, and seeing your changes through to production.

AI-assisted development is not a pilot program here -  it is in full use and is a standard part of our engineers’ daily workflow.  Claude Code is used actively and its role is expanding.  You will be expected to lean into these tools to learn their strengths and failure modes firsthand and verify output rather than accept it.  Our engineers treat AI as a fast, tireless collaborator that still requires oversight, and they leverage it to move considerably faster without lowering their standards.

Essential Job Functions

•        Solve challenging problems by designing innovative, optimal solutions to complex problems.

•        Work closely with cross-functional teams to gather and define requirements, determine level of effort, and contribute to user experience, design, and architecture decisions.

•        Serve as a key player in the implementation of software projects, including project schedules, milestones, and integration into the overall system.

•        Participate in all phases of the application development process.

•        Contribute quality code and strive for excellence within the team and company culture.

•        Deliver features and defect fixes across the web application, API, and database layers, with primary responsibility for the quality of your own work.

•        Write and maintain automated tests and keep changes passing pull request and build validation gates.

•        Participate in code review as both author and reviewer, applying Tecuity coding standards and Pull Request guidelines.

•        Use AI-assisted development tooling as part of your normal workflow, holding generated code to the same review, testing, and verification standard as the code you write yourself.

•        Author the engineering documentation that accompanies your work, including acceptance criteria, QA testing instructions, effort estimates, and explanations for non-technical stakeholders.

•        Provide user support for web software applications and support your own changes in development, stage, and production, including investigating defects and data issues that do not reproduce locally.

•        Participate in the build and release process for your assigned implementations, including branch and promotion workflows in Azure DevOps.

•        Deliver on multiple competing priorities and implementations with little to no supervision.

•        Other programming duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

•        4-year degree or equivalent experience

•        6+ years of professional work experience coding in C# in a .NET environment (Our platform is currently .NET 8 and .NET 10, ASP.NET Core, Web API, LINQ, and established .NET Framework (legacy) implementations maintenance)

•        6+ years of experience on MS SQL Server or equivalent SQL experience. Must be strong on stored procedures and functions

•        Experience with web technologies: ASP.NET, HTML5, JavaScript, AJAX, CSS, JSON

•        Practical experience with a component-based JavaScript framework.  (Our front end is React with Redux)

•        Experience developing and consuming REST APIs

•        Experience with Entity Framework Core, including migrations, alongside stored- procedure based data access.

•        Experience writing automated unit tests and working in a codebase where tests gate the build.

•        Experience with Git in a branch-and-pull request workflow

•        Experience developing cross-browser code and responsive CSS

•        Strong written and verbal communication skills, including writing clearly for non-technical stakeholders

•        Demonstrated ability to leverage AI-assisted development tooling while retaining full ownership of correctness.

Preferred Qualifications

·         Experience with the Agile software development methodologies

·         Experience maintaining and modernizing long-lived applications

·         Experience with Microsoft Azure application hosting, such as App Services, Blob Storage, Key Vault, and managed identity-based configuration.

·         Experience consuming and upgrading versioned internal NuGet packages, and reasoning about the impact of a change across a dependency graph

·         Experience with structured logging and application monitoring, such as Serilog or Application Insights.

·         Experience with modern authentication, such as OpenID Connect, OAuth, or JWT.

·         Experience with configurable multi-tenant or white-label software, driven by client specifications.

·         Experience with government, regulated, or compliance-driven software, and handling personally identifiable information.

·         Experience with CI/CD pipelines, such as Azure DevOps Pipelines.

·         Experience with web accessibility standards for public-facing applications.

·         Experience with Windows desktop development, such as WinForms

·         Experience with reporting tools such as Active Reports
