Job description

Are we the bridge to your future?

We are currently searching for an experienced Senior Bridge Engineer focusing on bridge design and plan production to support our Gulf Region located in Mississippi and/or Tennessee.


To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, 10 years of professional experience in structural engineering.


Candidates should be based in or open to relocating to Mississippi or Tennessee.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Lead and oversee bridge design projects from concept through completion, including analysis, design, and preparation of construction documents
  • Manage the development of design plans, specifications, and calculations for various transportation and infrastructure projects
  • Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders to ensure timely and successful project delivery
  • Perform structural analysis using state-of-the-art software and apply engineering principles to solve complex design challenges
  • Ensure compliance with DOT and other clients’ design standards, guidelines, and specifications
  • Review and approve design plans, calculations, and construction documents for accuracy, completeness, and quality
  • Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior engineers and staff.
  • Conduct site visits and inspections to assess the condition of existing structures and to monitor construction progress
  • Review contractor submittals and provide recommendations on materials, methods, and construction procedures
  • Participate in meetings with clients, consultants, and regulatory agencies to discuss project requirements and progress
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, best practices, and advancements in structural engineering technology

What you need to have:

  • BS degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university
  • A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in structural engineering, with a focus on bridge design and plan production
  • PE is required
  • Proven experience working on DOT projects and familiarity with DOT standards and specifications
  • Proficiency in using bridge analysis software programs such as Open Bridge Designer, CSI Bridge, FB-MultiPier, and other bridge analysis software. Familiarity with drafting software such as MicroStation
  • In-depth understanding of AASHTO and other relevant codes and standards.
  • Experience with all phases of bridge design, including analysis, detailing, and plan preparation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
  • Valid driver’s license
  • A satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)

Bonus points if you have:

  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited university
  • Experience in managing and leading teams of engineers and technical staff
  • Familiarity with advanced bridge design methodologies and materials
  • Previous experience with design-build projects
  • Knowledge of relevant software for structural analysis and design
