What is a senior software developer?

Senior Software Developers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and maintain complex software applications. They often lead development teams, mentor junior developers, and make critical architectural decisions. Their responsibilities include writing high-quality code, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring that software projects meet performance and security standards. With deep expertise in programming languages and software engineering principles, they play a key role in delivering successful technology solutions for organizations.

What does a senior software developer do?

As a Senior Software Developer, you’ll typically be responsible for leading complex development projects, designing technical solutions, and mentoring junior team members. Daily tasks often include writing and reviewing code, participating in architecture discussions, collaborating with cross-functional teams (such as QA, product management, and DevOps), and troubleshooting high-level technical issues. You may also be involved in setting coding standards, conducting code reviews, and helping to plan sprints or project roadmaps.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a senior software developer?

To thrive as a Senior Software Developer, you need deep expertise in programming languages, software architecture, and problem-solving, typically backed by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with development frameworks, version control systems like Git, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is standard, and certifications in these areas can be beneficial. Job description

Overview

Lyric is an AI-first, platform-based healthcare technology company focused on simplifying the business of care by preventing inaccurate payments and reducing waste in the healthcare ecosystem. We are a market leader with 35 years of pre-pay editing expertise, and we are recognized for our achievements, including being named 2025 Best in KLAS for Pre-Payment Accuracy and Integrity, HI-TRUST and SOC2 certified, and a recipient of the 2025 CandE Award for Candidate Experience. This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of healthcare with AI while contributing to a modernized payment integrity platform.

We are looking for a Full Stack Engineer to build intuitive, performant web experiences backed by scalable, event-driven services. You’ll own end-to-end delivery from modular frontend work to resilient microservices, collaborating with product, UX, DevOps, and QA to ship features at scale. If you thrive in fast-paced environments, value clean architecture and developer experience, and enjoy solving complex UI/UX and distributed systems challenges, this role is for you.

Responsibilities
  • Ship modernization work at a pace that surprises people.

  • Use AI agents (Cursor, Claude Code, Codex) to drive framework upgrades, refactors, API extraction, test scaffolding, and documentation while catching hallucinations and preventing regressions before they reach a PR.

  • Build reusable playbooks the team can actually follow: prompt templates, repo-level agent instructions, migration checklists, review heuristics, and clear definitions of done for AI-assisted changes.

  • Collaborate with the team to measurably move the needle by migrating more modules per sprint and shortening PR turnaround times without increasing production bugs.

  • Enhance the team’s quality through clearer PRs, increased test coverage, up-to-date documentation, and reduced repeated mistakes.

  • Modernize a real .NET + SQL Server stack, upgrading legacy services to current .NET (LTS where appropriate) and clarifying architecture boundaries to address long-standing performance issues.

  • Pursue a proper API-layer architecture – RESTful, versioned – built for correctness and maintainability, not just functionality.

  • Work with SQL Server on query performance, indexing, and transactional correctness, including data pipeline work (e.g., Kafka) if needed.

  • Own security and privacy by default, enforce least privilege, and ensure safe data handling in a healthcare context.

  • Implement real quality guardrails: automated tests, CI that blocks bad changes, structured logging, and observability to inform decisions before users are affected.

  • Review code thoughtfully, engage in honest architectural discussions, and raise the bar without unproductive conduct.

  • Partner with analysts, stakeholders, and engineers to translate business problems into working software that delivers real value.

  • Help build delivery plans that balance trade-offs and align with pragmatic milestones.

Required Skills & Experience
  • 5+ years building and shipping production systems with real users, able to work independently and collaboratively in fast-moving teams.

  • Some C# and modern .NET experience (Core and beyond), with participation in meaningful refactoring and migration in large codebases.

  • Strong SQL Server capabilities including schema design, query tuning, and performance troubleshooting.

  • Cloud experience with Azure and/or AWS; Azure experience is particularly relevant.

  • API design experience with service-oriented architectures, versioning, authentication, reliability, and testing practices.

  • Experience using AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, or similar) daily, including multi-file refactors, migrations, test generation, and review workflows, with informed opinions on what works.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience modernizing a legacy ASP.NET / .NET Framework codebase; Azure modernization patterns are a plus.

  • Strong communication: clear PR descriptions, straightforward design docs, pragmatic collaboration, and low ego.

  • Experience with distributed systems tooling (Kafka, event-driven architectures) and Postgres alongside SQL Server.

  • Front-end experience with Angular and/or React/Next.js.

  • Experience establishing agent-friendly engineering practices: writing repo instructions for AI tools, tasking AI-driven work, CI guardrails for AI-generated code, feature flags, canary deployments, and progressive delivery.

  • Background in regulated domains (healthcare, fintech, payments) where speed must not compromise compliance.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary range for this full-time role: 125,241.00 – 187,862.00 USD. The exact offer depends on relevant experience, education, and location. Compensation details reflect base salary only and do not include total rewards.

Lyric is an Equal Opportunity Employer and strives to create an inclusive environment that empowers employees and fosters collaborative success.
