Job description

Own and evolve the platforms behind BRJ's publishing operation — our public journal website, the Atlas publishing CRM, and the author-facing submission and review pipeline.

About the Role

Boston Research Journals runs its entire publishing lifecycle — submission, peer review, invoicing, production and global launch — on software we build in-house. As a Senior Software Developer you will own features end to end across our TypeScript stack: a Next.js public website on Cloudflare Workers, a React admin portal, and an Express + PostgreSQL backend on AWS.

What You Will Do
  • Design, build and maintain features across the public website, the Atlas admin portal and the backend API.
  • Model publishing workflows (submissions, issues, invoicing, notifications) into clean data models and APIs.
  • Keep the production systems healthy: performance, error budgets, backups and deploy pipelines.
  • Review code, raise the engineering bar and mentor mid-level colleagues.
  • Collaborate with editors and operations staff to scope work and cut it into shippable increments.
What We Are Looking For
  • Production experience with React and Node.js (Next.js and Express are our daily tools).
  • Solid relational-database skills — schema design, migrations and query tuning on PostgreSQL or similar.
  • Experience owning features end to end: requirements, implementation, tests, deploy and follow-through.
  • Clear written communication in English — we are a distributed, documentation-heavy team.
Nice to Have
  • Cloudflare Workers / serverless edge experience.
  • AWS (EC2, SES, S3/R2) and CI/CD with GitHub Actions.
  • Prior exposure to scholarly publishing, OJS-style systems or CRMs.
