Job summary:

The Senior Advanced Design & Simulation Engineer will provide complex engineering support to the business group application engineering and operations functions specific to product design, design verification via computational analysis, material model generation, material testing support and statistical data analysis, training seminars, and customer support as an engineering design subject matter expert.

This position will provide technical assistance in responding to customer inquiries, design expertise to new product development (NPD) projects, tooling design and optimization, process improvement and optimization, and material development through testing and data analytic support. This position will also be responsible for providing technical assistance to the Sales and Sales Support teams to effectively service our customers as well as to use their technical and industry experience to provide support to more junior Engineering staff.

This position also requires advanced technical capability in computational analysis tools. These advanced technical capabilities include programming in Python or equivalent language, development of advanced material models, utilization of parametric analysis techniques, and advanced design analysis such as damage propagation. These capabilities allow the Senior Advanced Design & Simulation Engineer to adapt the analytical tools to new and more complex technical challenges.

Finally, the Senior Advanced Design and Simulation Engineer is expected to provide horizontal leadership to the technical organization via their role as a subject matter expert in both design and analysis. This Senior position is expected to lead training initiatives in advanced engineering concepts as well as coach and mentor less experienced personnel across the entire organization. Additionally, the Senior level position is expected to influence the technical approach to modelling, material testing, computational analysis, analysis of results, and utilization of the technical work across the entire organization.

This role will work in partnership with customer technical staff as well as the internal operations team.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Design and recommend products for the customers to solve problems and meet the equipment design requirements. Document all projects per Business, Engineering, and Company work instructions and procedures to maintain compliance with ISO9001.
  • Actively participate on Strategic Account Teams, attending team meetings, collaborating with and developing relationships with customers, providing onsite support through growth of lateral and vertical contact chains.
  • Be active in growing sales at assigned accounts through recognizing and participating in new products that are either within or are a logical extension of GT's core capabilities.
  • Maintain the reputation as a technical expert in advanced design, computational analysis, process optimization, and material testing.
  • Manage projects independently and maintain effective communications between the GT project teams, engineering, sales, manufacturing and quality throughout project.
  • Utilize experience to provide technical support and coaching to junior level engineering staff regarding design, analysis, and materials.
  • Review applications projects as necessary for accuracy and completeness, providing comments and/or approvals as appropriate.
  • Provide technical assistance to manufacturing via advanced engineering support and computational analysis in support of our products to ensure that the customers receive high-quality, consistent products that meet the required specifications, as well as ensure operational processes are efficient and optimized.
  • Provide advanced engineering services at customer locations as well as industry conferences to demonstrate GT's high technical competency in pursuit of existing and new business opportunities.
  • Develop advanced computational models, techniques, and analytical tools for use across the organization through programming and modification to analytical capabilities.
  • Provide training and development to junior staff members on advanced Engineering and design topics. Leverage subject matter expertise horizontally across the organization to enhance the organizations overall design and analysis capabilities.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education/Certifications: B.S. in Engineering discipline required. Advanced degree preferred

Skills and Experience:

  • Ideal candidate will have 10+ years of engineering experience, using computer driven computational design for stress, thermal and vibration analysis. 5-10 years of experience in an engineering role required. Customer-facing experience preferred.
  • Design experience using 2D and 3D Drafting and Modeling software (ABAQUS, ANSYS or Solidworks)
  • Programming in Python or equivalent language
  • Experience with material modelling software: ie DigiMat
  • Experience with material testing and material data analysis preferred.
  • Previous customer-facing experience desired.
  • Ability to work in cross-functional team environment required
  • Effective technical communication / presentation skills with internal and external customers
  • Ability to travel 10-20% of time for customer meetings
