Job description

Worker Type: EmployeeJob Post End Date: 08/29/2026

About this opportunity:

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Foster Creek & Sunrise Operations Process Engineering, the Staff Operations Process Engineer will identify, scope, and advance high-value optimization and capacity debottleneck opportunities at Cenovus' Foster Creek (FC) and Sunrise (SR) SAGD facilities. The role will work effectively with stakeholders to determine safe and efficient solutions to overcome process constraints, increase production capacity, and improve operating costs. This includes developing robust project scopes, business cases, and technical solutions that influence capital allocation decisions and drive measurable value for each asset.

As a senior technical contributor, this role acts as a subject matter expert (SME) and key integrator across numerous disciplines (Operations, Engineering, Projects, Integrity, etc.), ensuring solutions are practical, executable, and aligned with asset priorities and economic hurdles. This role will identify and solve complex, time-sensitive production issues requiring deeper analysis beyond routine day-to-day engineering support, necessitating strong technical process understanding and multi-disciplinary background.

What you'll do:

  • Identify, prioritize, and lead evaluation of high-impact production, reliability, and cost optimization opportunities across FC and SR facilities, with a focus on debottlenecking within Safe Operating Limits (SOLs)

  • Own end-to-end scoping of opportunities, including:

    • Problem definition

    • Data analysis and root cause identification

    • Option development and screening

    • Economic evaluation and risk assessment

  • Develop clear, decision-quality project scopes and business cases, and present to OMM/CORE to secure funding and alignment

  • Act as technical authority and SME through project handoff and execution, ensuring scoped solutions deliver intended outcomes

  • Work across disciplines (Operations, Production Eng., Development Eng., Facility Eng., Major Projects, iSTO, Integrity and Reliability Eng, etc.) to ensure integrated, asset-wide solutions.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to site and Calgary-based engineers (indirect influence).

  • Act as a go-to expert for complex process and facility performance challenges.

  • Influence asset strategy by shaping capital investment decisions and opportunity prioritization.

  • Establish and reinforce best practices in opportunity identification, scoping, and economic evaluation.

  • Model and share knowledge about best practices, inform policy and guidelines with respect to the technical and professional components of the job.

Who you are:

Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada.

  • University degree in Engineering and P. Eng. designation from APEGA / APEGS.

  • Minimum 12 years of relevant experience.

  • Advanced skill set in SAGD, with significant depth and breadth of knowledge in Operations Process Engineering and a strong understanding of other core SAGD functions.

  • Advance skillset in core process engineering functions such as: process simulations, PSV calculations, line sizing, determination of bottlenecks, benchmarking, heat integration and heat exchanger performance, etc.

  • Advanced knowledge in, or ability to integrate, across disciplines such as Production Engineering, Major Projects Process Engineering Design, Facility Engineering, Process Controls, Projects, etc.

  • Strong understanding of facility constraints, debottlenecking methodologies, and Safe Operating Limits (SOLs).

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and evaluate technically complex, high-value opportunities, including economic analysis and risk assessment.

We acknowledge the value of transferrable skills and may consider equivalent combinations of experience and education should you not meet a specific requirement.

Note: The application deadline for this position is 11:59 PM MT August 28, 2026.
