Senior Semiconductor Engineer information

What does a senior semiconductor engineer do?

A Senior Semiconductor Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing semiconductor devices such as microchips and integrated circuits. They lead complex projects, oversee the fabrication process, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure products meet performance and quality standards. Their expertise is essential in advancing semiconductor technology, improving manufacturing efficiency, and troubleshooting technical issues. Senior Semiconductor Engineers often mentor junior staff and contribute to research and development within their organization.

How does a senior semiconductor engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the development cycle?

As a Senior Semiconductor Engineer, you will regularly work with cross-functional teams that include design, test, manufacturing, and product management. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, aligning on technical specifications, and troubleshooting issues that arise throughout the development process. Effective communication and coordination are key, as you'll need to translate complex engineering concepts for non-technical stakeholders and ensure that project timelines and quality standards are met. This collaborative environment provides opportunities to both mentor junior engineers and contribute to strategic decisions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior semiconductor engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Semiconductor Engineer, you need deep expertise in semiconductor device physics, circuit design, and fabrication processes, usually backed by an advanced degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard EDA tools like Cadence or Synopsys and familiarity with process simulation and verification software are essential. Strong problem-solving, project management, and cross-functional communication skills set top performers apart. These skills ensure precise design, efficient production, and successful collaboration in delivering innovative semiconductor solutions.

What is the difference between Senior Semiconductor Engineer vs Semiconductor Process Engineer?

AspectSenior Semiconductor EngineerSemiconductor Process Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related; experience in chip design and developmentBachelor's/Master's in Chemical, Materials, or Electrical Engineering; focus on manufacturing processes
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, R&D centers, and development teamsManufacturing facilities, cleanrooms, and process development labs
Employer & Industry UsageSemiconductor companies, tech firms, R&D institutionsManufacturers, fabrication plants, and process development firms

While both roles require a strong engineering background, Senior Semiconductor Engineers focus on chip design and development, whereas Semiconductor Process Engineers specialize in manufacturing processes and fabrication techniques. The roles often overlap in industry and credentials but differ in daily responsibilities and work environments.

Job description

Senior Civil Engineer

Redwood Materials is seeking an experienced Senior Civil Engineer to serve as a senior individual contributor on our internal EPC Infrastructure Engineering team. In this role, you will independently deliver civil design and engineering across our battery manufacturing, recycling, and BESS infrastructure projects - managing work through all phases from planning and design through bid and construction. You will partner closely with internal multi-disciplinary teams and external consultants to produce coordinated, code-compliant designs that support Redwood's mission of building a sustainable circular economy for lithium-ion batteries and battery energy storage systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage multiple civil engineering projects throughout planning, design, bid, and construction phases, including BMC1 sitewide infrastructure, plant projects, and off-site BESS deployments
  • Independently develop high-quality civil engineering deliverables including construction documents, drawings, specifications, narratives, and calculations in conformance with IBC, ASCE 7, and local jurisdictional requirements
  • Proactively communicate project needs, changes, schedule, and status to internal stakeholders and external team members
  • Review drawings and proposals by vendors, engineers, and architects, and drive multi-disciplinary coordination across structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and I&C
  • Manage external civil engineering consultants including scope of work, deliverables, and budget, and guide consultant designs through project completion
  • Perform constructability reviews, support permitting and agency coordination with Storey County and other AHJs, and resolve civil RFIs and field changes during construction
  • Ensure compliance with company engineering processes, applicable codes and standards, and regulatory and safety requirements across all design deliverables

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline; advanced degree preferred
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE); Nevada licensure required or obtainable via comity within 2 months of hire
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing and building high-tech/industrial infrastructure and operational facilities (semiconductor, solar, battery, manufacturing, etc.) or battery energy storage system deployments
  • Experience in civil engineering design including stormwater management plans (flood control and water quality), SWPPPs, heavy civil, wastewater, and manufacturing/industrial operational construction
  • Site development background with experience designing roadways, grading, pavements, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, domestic and fire water main systems, erosion and sediment control, and traffic plans
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and hydrology/stormwater management software
  • Working knowledge of IBC, ASCE 7, and NFPA with the ability to quickly research local jurisdictional requirements
  • Ability to conduct, document, and stamp engineering calculations and design packages applying established procedures and safety requirements
  • Ability to manage external civil consultants through all project phases including scope, schedule, deliverables, and budget
  • Ability to juggle multiple concurrent projects and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment; travel up to 10% between Nevada plant sites
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams, external consultants, contractors, and AHJs
