What is a senior robotics software engineer?

Senior Robotics Software Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and maintain software systems that control robots and automated machinery. They work on advanced algorithms, perception, motion planning, and integration with hardware to enable robotic systems to perform complex tasks safely and efficiently. These engineers often lead technical projects, mentor junior team members, and collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to bring innovative robotic solutions to life. Their expertise is crucial in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and autonomous vehicles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior robotics software engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Robotics Software Engineer, you need advanced programming skills (often in C++, Python, or ROS), a strong background in computer science or engineering, and extensive experience with robotics algorithms. Familiarity with simulation tools (like Gazebo or MATLAB), version control systems, and relevant certifications in robotics or AI are highly valuable. Problem-solving, leadership, and excellent communication skills help drive complex projects and mentor junior engineers. These skills are essential to develop robust robotic systems, ensure seamless team collaboration, and deliver innovative solutions in a rapidly evolving field.

What are some typical challenges a senior robotics software engineer faces when integrating software with hardware systems?

A Senior Robotics Software Engineer often encounters challenges when ensuring that the software communicates reliably and efficiently with a variety of hardware components, such as sensors, actuators, and embedded controllers. Debugging real-time issues, handling latency, and synchronizing multiple subsystems are common hurdles. Additionally, adapting software to accommodate frequent hardware changes or updates and maintaining robust system performance under different operating conditions require both technical depth and strong cross-disciplinary collaboration with hardware engineers and technicians.

What is the difference between Senior Robotics Software Engineer vs Robotics Software Engineer?

Job description

About the Role:
Torc is developing Level 4 autonomous semi-truck software to transform how freight moves across the world. As a Software Engineer I on the Metrics & Release team, you will contribute to the cloud-based infrastructure that evaluates system performance and ensures software updates meet safety and reliability standards before deployment. This team owns the safety metrics, KPIs, and automated evaluation pipelines that enable scalable, production-grade autonomy. In this role, you will help build and maintain the systems that process vehicle telemetry and validation data, turning raw truck data into measurable signals used to evaluate system readiness. You will work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to support the development of metrics, validation workflows, and data pipelines that help ensure the safety and reliability of Torc's autonomous driving platform.
What You'll Do:
Contribute to the development and maintenance of AWS-based data pipelines that process vehicle telemetry and validation data.
Develop Python code and services supporting safety and performance metric computation.
Assist in analyzing truck-generated data and translating it into measurable system signals.
Support implementation of release validation logic tied to automated testing pipelines.
Collaborate with systems, validation, and autonomy teams to help define meaningful KPIs and metrics.
Investigate pipeline failures, data inconsistencies, and telemetry anomalies using logs and large-scale datasets.
Support statistical analysis and reporting across validation and testing data.
Participate in code reviews and collaborate with team members to deliver reliable, maintainable software.
What You'll Need:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field plus 0-4 years of relevant experience, OR Master's degree in a related technical field.
Strong programming experience in Python.
Familiarity with data processing, data pipelines, or working with large datasets.
Basic understanding of cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS services such as S3, Lambda, ECS, or Step Functions.
Basic understanding of statistics, data analysis, or metric computation.
Ability to analyze system behavior through data and logs.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Nice to Have:
Exposure to robotics, autonomous systems, or sensor data processing.
Experience working with telemetry, event data, or time-series datasets.
Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools such as Temporal, Airflow, or AWS Step Functions.
Experience contributing to automated testing or validation pipelines.
Experience working in safety-critical or high-reliability systems.
