What is the difference between Senior Robotics Engineer Localization vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Robotics Engineer LocalizationRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Robotics, Computer Science, or related; experience in localization algorithmsBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related; programming skills
Work EnvironmentRobotics development labs, field testing, autonomous vehicle companiesSoftware development teams, robotics companies, research labs
Industry UsageAutonomous vehicles, mobile robots, dronesRobotics applications across industries, including manufacturing and service robots

While both roles involve robotics software development, Senior Robotics Engineer Localization specializes in developing algorithms for determining a robot's position within its environment, often requiring expertise in sensor fusion and mapping. Robotics Software Engineers focus broadly on creating software for robot control, perception, and navigation. The localization role is more specialized, whereas the software engineer role covers a wider range of robotics software development tasks.

Job description

About LUUM

LUUM is revolutionizing beauty through the power of robotics, artificial intelligence, and skilled artistry. We've developed a first-of-its-kind robotic system for applying eyelash extensions-bringing advanced technology to an industry where precision, artistry, and personalization are key. Our team brings together experienced engineers, skilled lash artists, and serial entrepreneurs, all united by a shared mission: to combine innovative technology with beauty expertise to deliver an exceptional experience for every client.

About the Role:

We are seeking a Senior Robotics Engineer who is excited about applying the physical application of robotics and AI in the beauty space.  Our engineering team is lean but experienced so this opportunity will give you the chance to make significant contributions to the evolution of the company and technology.

The LUUM Robots feature an array of highly customized actuation and machine vision - both classical and neural network based - to precisely manipulate and attach the tiny extension fibers onto natural eyelashes. In more than eight years of development, we've assembled many of the pieces of this difficult puzzle - enough to provide real services to thousands of paying repeat customers - and now we're looking to expand our team to advance the technology even further.  Our newly deployed fourth generation sytem includes more actuated degrees of freedom and far more autonomy than leading surgical robots, producing an array of engineering challenges unique in the field.
Required Qualifications
  • MS or PhD in Computer Science, EE, ME
  • 8+ years of object oriented programming in a professional team environment in C++
  • Strong knowledge of Python
  • Experience with control and modeling of robotic manipulators and/or equivalent automation systems
  • Experience in ROS and associated libraries, especially for motion planning and collision modeling, or equivalents
  • Working knowledge of Linux
  • Knowledge of industry standard best practices for maintainable software design
  • Excellent debugging and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively on a small team of both technical and non technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Deep experience with Linux
  • Experience with motor control and servo amplifiers
  • Experience with CUDA development or equivalent
  • General mechatronics background
  • Computer vision experience, especially stereoscopic computer vision.
$170,000 - $200,000 a year
Why LUUM?

We offer:
Competitive cash and equity compensation and opportunity for advancement
Competitive PTO policy for Full and Part-time employees
Competitive Medical, Vision and Dental benefits for eligible employees

At LUUM, we are dedicated to building an exceptional company and delivering the best possible experience for our customers. In pursuit of this goal, we are proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, veteran status, disability, or any other legally protected characteristic.
