Job Summary:
Guide, coordinate and support the University of Mississippi Medical Center's risk management review process. To participate in the review, evaluation, monitoring, measuring and adjustment of all patient care and associated claims; participates in the development of risk minimization program. Maintain oversight of all allegations of Abuse/Neglect/Exploitation, event reporting system and Risk Management and patient safety policies.
Education & Experience
Education and Experience Required:
Three (3) years of RN experience in healthcare risk management, patient safety, clinical quality, or healthcare compliance.
Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:
Valid RN License. Certified Professional Healthcare Risk Management from the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management or Certified Professional in Patient Safety from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement required post-hire within 18 months.

Knowledge of nursing theory and practice. Knowledge and understanding of clinical organization structure, workflow, and operating procedures. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Ability to manage multiple priorities under time constraints; ability to analyze and solve problems. Understanding of cost and quality issues. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills to interact with a wide range of constituencies. Ability to led and assist with decision-making skills.
Responsibilities:
  • Reviews patient medical records and collects data for legal and risk management analyses, studies, and monitoring.
  • Conducts legal research, prepares opinions of counsel, and identifies legal issues to develop effective strategies and solutions.
  • Guides providers on disclosure with patients and families following medical errors, including facilitating discussions, coaching staff on appropriate communication and documentation, overseeing billing concerns, and advising legal counsel on early resolution or litigation.
  • Participates in system-wide initiatives related to risk assessment and management; prepares and presents biannual reports on risk management and quality indicators to the Quality and Safety Board and other assigned forums.
  • Oversees risk management operations, including patient safety policies, event reporting systems, and allegations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Leads investigations, ensures compliance with CMS patient rights, oversees adjudication processes, and reports to regulatory agencies as required.
  • Maintains oversight of the event reporting system, ensuring appropriate access, timely investigations by clinical staff, leadership engagement, and closure of safety events to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensures compliance with TJC standards by maintaining current knowledge and supporting hospitals and clinics in meeting accreditation requirements; serves as chair or co-chair for TJC chapters regarding institutional patient safety as assigned by Accreditation Director.
  • Leads investigations and serves as the primary point of contact for external agency inquiries and unannounced regulatory visits, including coordinating documentation, notifying leadership, preparing written and verbal responses, and supporting corrective action plans. Agencies include, TJC, Mississippi Department of Health, Patient Safety Organizations, Leapfrog, and the Mississippi Attorney General.
  • Assists in reviewing clinical practices for quality improvement and loss control; recommends corrective actions; ensures adherence to policy and consistency of care; and prepares reports.
